Ecstasy [VHS] Overview

It is one of the notorious titles in all cinema history, but--sigh--it looks rather quaint today. In the mid-1930s, Ecstasy was a great conversation piece, for its scandalous acknowledgment of sexual passion in women and its revelation of the naked form of actress Hedy Kiesler, who would become the Hollywood star Hedy Lamarr. Henry Miller even wrote an excited essay about it, sure proof that something libidinous was loose. Czech director Gustav Machatý constructs the movie as an almost wordless shadow play of symbols and signs, mostly sexual (there are many close-ups of heavy-breathing horses and nude statues, cut together for maximum erotic impact). As precious as some of these things seem now, it's still amazing to consider Machatý's nerve in depicting one of the first orgasms to hit the movies. And then there's Hedy, whose expressive eyes matter more than her brief skinny-dip. She's an unmistakable future star. --Robert Horton

Environmentally friendly animated film with a strong message that doesn't club anyone over the head--but it certainly can't be missed. Zak (voiced by Christian Slater) is a heavy-machine operator whose job is to push over any vegetation in his path. He's shrunken to wee size, however, when Crysta (Samantha Mathis), a fairy of the forest, not only finds him cute but wants him to see the results of his handiwork. They end up battling Hexxus, an evil force imprisoned in a tree, which now wants to destroy all of Ferngully. Robin Williams offers genuine comic relief as a bat named Batty Koda. Agreeable without making much impact, it's a piffle of a film for one that deals with such strong subject matter. --Keith Simanton

Toy Story
There is greatness in film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--we smile at the spell it puts us into and are refreshed, and nary a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call "movie magic," and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys reawaken the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney.
Lasseter's story is universal and magical: what do toys do when they're not played with? Cowboy Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Andy's favorite bedroom toy, tries to calm the other toys (some original, some classic) during a wrenching time of year--the birthday party, when newer toys may replace them. Sure enough, Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) is the new toy that takes over the throne. Buzz has a crucial flaw, though--he believes he's the real Buzz Lightyear, not a toy. Lasseter further scores with perfect voice casting, including Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head and Wallace Shawn as a meek dinosaur. The director-animator won a special Oscar for "the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film." Toy Story 2
John Lasseter and his gang of high-tech creators at Pixar create another entertainment for the ages. Like the few great movie sequels, Toy Story 2 comments on why the first one was so wonderful while finding a fresh angle worthy of a new film. The craze of toy collecting becomes the focus here, as we find out Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) is not only a beloved toy to Andy but also a rare doll from a popular '60s children's show. When a greedy collector takes Woody, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) launches a rescue mission with Andy's other toys. To say more would be a crime because this is one of the most creative and smile-inducing films since, well, the first Toy Story.
Although the toys look the same as in the 1994 feature, Pixar shows how much technology has advanced: the human characters look more human, backgrounds are superior, and two action sequences that book-end the film are dazzling. And it's a hoot for kids and adults. The film is packed with spoofs, easily accessible in-jokes, and inspired voice casting (with newcomer Joan Cusack especially a delight as Cowgirl Jessie). But as the Pixar canon of films illustrates, the filmmakers are storytellers first. Woody's heart-tugging predicament can easily be translated into the eternal debate of living a good life versus living forever. Toy Story 2 also achieved something in the U.S. two other outstanding 1999 animated features (The Iron Giant, Princess Mononoke) could not: it became a huge box-office hit. --Doug Thomas

Toy Story 3
What made the original Toy Story so great, besides its significant achievement as the first-ever feature-length computer animated film, was its ability to instantly transport viewers into a magical world where it seemed completely plausible that toys were living, thinking beings who sprang to life the minute they were alone and wanted nothing more than to be loved and played with by their children. Toy Story 3 absolutely succeeds in the very same thing--adults and children alike, whether they've seen the original film or not, find themselves immediately immersed in a world in which Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack), Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head (Don Rickles and Estelle Harris), Ham (John Ratzenberger), Rex (Wallace Shawn), the aliens, and the rest of Andy's toys remain completely devoted to Andy (John Morris) even as he's getting ready to pack up and leave for college. Woody scoffs at the other toys' worries that they'll end up in the garbage, assuring them that they've earned a spot of honor in the attic, but when the toys are mistakenly donated to Sunnyside Daycare, Woody is the only toy whose devotion to Andy outweighs the promise of getting played with each and every day. Woody sets off toward home alone while the other toys settle in for some daycare fun, but things don't turn out quite as expected at the daycare thanks to the scheming, strawberry-scented old-timer bear Lots-o'-Huggin' (Ned Beatty). Eventually, Woody rejoins his friends and they all attempt a daring escape from the daycare, which could destroy them all. The pacing of the film is impeccable at this point, although the sense of peril may prove almost too intense for a few young viewers. Pixar's 3-D computer animation is top-notch as always and the voice talent in this film is tremendous, but in the end, it's Pixar's uncanny ability to combine drama, action, and humor in a way that irresistibly draws viewers into the world of the film that makes Toy Story 3 such great family entertainment. The Greatest Show on Earth is a heaping helping of flapdoodle served up by one of Hollywood's canniest entertainers: producer-director Cecil B. DeMille. This overripe melodrama purports to be life inside the Ringling Brothers Circus; maybe it's not, but the circus ought to be like this. The actors wrestling with the purple dialogue are: early-career Charlton Heston, as the tough-as-nails circus manager; Cornel Wilde and Betty Hutton as trapeze artistes; and Gloria Grahame (who won an Oscar), dangling from elephants. Best of all, James Stewart plays a clown who--for mysterious reasons--never removes his makeup. (Stewart took the supporting role simply because he'd always wanted to play a clown.) This is a fried-baloney sandwich of a movie: it ain't sophisticated, and probably isn't good for you, but once you start you can't stop. It was the box-office champ of 1952, and it shocked everybody by winning the best picture Oscar. --Robert Horton

Vacationing in northern California, Alfred Hitchcock was struck by a story in a Santa Cruz newspaper: "Seabird Invasion Hits Coastal Homes." From this peculiar incident, and his memory of a short story by Daphne du Maurier, the master of suspense created one of his strangest and most terrifying films. The Birds follows a chic blonde, Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren), as she travels to the coastal town of Bodega Bay to hook up with a rugged fellow (Rod Taylor) she's only just met. Before long the town is attacked by marauding birds, and Hitchcock's skill at staging action is brought to the fore. Beyond the superb effects, however, The Birds is also one of Hitchcock's most psychologically complicated scenarios, a tense study of violence, loneliness, and complacency. What really gets under your skin are not the bird skirmishes but the anxiety and the eerie quiet between attacks. The director elevated an unknown model, Tippi Hedren (mother of Melanie Griffith), to being his latest cool, blond leading lady, an experience that was not always easy on the much-pecked Ms. Hedren. Still, she returned for the next Hitchcock picture, the underrated Marnie. Treated with scant attention by serious critics in 1963, The Birds has grown into a classic and--despite the sci-fi trappings--one of Hitchcock's most serious films. --Robert Horton

The last film completed by Bruce Lee before his untimely death, Enter the Dragon was his entrée into Hollywood. The American-Hong Kong coproduction, shot in Asia by American director Robert Clouse, stars Lee as a British agent sent to infiltrate the criminal empire of bloodthirsty Asian crime lord Han (Shih Kien) through his annual international martial arts tournament. Lee spends his days taking on tournament combatants and nights breaking into the heavily guarded underground fortress, kicking the living tar out of anyone who stands in his way. The mix of kung fu fighting (choreographed by Lee himself) and James Bond intrigue (the plot has more than a passing resemblance to Dr. No) is pulpy by any standard, but the generous budget and talented cast of world-class martial artists puts this film in a category well above Lee's earlier Hong Kong productions. Unfortunately he's off the screen for large chunks of time as American maverick competitors (and champion martial artists) John Saxon and Jim Kelly take center stage, but once the fighting starts Lee takes over. The tournament setting provides an ample display of martial arts mastery of many styles and climaxes with a huge free-for-all, but the highlight is Lee's brutal one-on-one with the claw-fisted Han in the dynamic hall-of-mirrors battle. Lee narrows his eyes and tenses into a wiry force of sinew, speed, and ruthless determination. --Sean Axmaker

Billed as a "reimagining" of the original 1968 film, Tim Burton's extraordinary Planet of the Apes constantly borders on greatness, adhering to the spirit of Pierre Boulle's original novel while exploring fresh and inventive ideas and paying honorable tribute to the '68 sci-fi classic. Burton's gifts for eccentric inspiration and visual ingenuity make this a movie that's as entertaining as it is provocative, beginning with Rick Baker's best-ever ape makeup (hand that man an Oscar®!), and continuing through the surprisingly nuanced performances and breathtaking production design. Add to all this an intelligent screenplay that turns Boulle's speculative reversal--the dominance of apes over humans--into a provocative study of civil rights and civil war. The film finally goes too far with a woefully misguided ending that pays weak homage to the original, but everything preceding that misfire is astonishingly right.
While attempting the space-pod retrieval of a chimpanzee test pilot, Major Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) enters a magnetic storm that propels him into the distant future, where he crash-lands on the ape-ruled planet. Among the primitively civilized apes, treatment of enslaved humans is a divisive issue: senator's daughter Ari (Helena Bonham Carter) advocates equality while the ruthless General Thade (Tim Roth) promotes extermination. While Davidson ignites a human rebellion, this conflict is explored with admirable depth and emotion, and sharp dialogue allows Burton's exceptional cast to bring remarkable expressiveness to their embattled ape characters, most notably in the comic relief of orangutan slave trader Limbo (played to perfection by Paul Giamatti). Classic lines from the original film are cleverly reversed (including an unbilled cameo for Charlton Heston, in ape regalia as Thade's dying father), and while this tale of interspecies warfare leads to an ironic conclusion that's not altogether satisfying, it still bears the ripe fruit of a timeless what-if idea. --Jeff Shannon

More ambitious than most horror films, this one allowed Craven to generate compelling plausibility with the fact-based story of a Harvard researcher (Bill Pullman) who travels to Haiti to procure a secret voodoo powder that places people into a state of simulated death. His investigation into the hidden world of black magic grows increasingly dangerous until he's caught in a living nightmare--a potentially deadly predicament that inspired the film's advertising tag line: "Don't bury me... I'm not dead!" Craven pays particular attention to authentic details of Haitian society and the role voodoo plays in Haitian culture, and the film gains additional atmosphere from location shooting in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. British comedian Eddie Izzard wears makeup, platform heels, and a shimmering magenta suit in Glorious, a video of his standup act filmed in England. Izzard takes a little bit of Robin Williams, a little bit of Jerry Seinfeld, even a little bit of Bob Newhart, but the final mix is absolutely his own and dizzily funny. It's not so much the subjects of his humor--though not many comics make jokes about classical mythology or evil giraffes--as it is the way he fluidly skips from thing to thing in a madcap free-associative whirl. He lulls you by seeming casual and almost sloppy, but when he needs to be precise his gestures and mimicry are razor sharp. There have been a million tired jokes made about trying to get a shower to stay at the right temperature, but Izzard manages to make even that funny. He's even funnier when he's imitating Sean Connery as Noah, trying to convince God that a speedboat would make a much better photo opportunity than an ark, or playing a beekeeper flirting with someone passing on the street. Much of the giddiness comes from his astounding sense of spontaneity. Half the show seems to have been made up on the spot, and if it wasn't, you boggle wondering how he could have possibly written something so ridiculous and yet appropriate. Though he uses a number of four-letter words, his humor is surprisingly clean, and even the most frank vulgarities seems like a bit of impish innocence coming out his mouth. Alfred Hitchcock considered this 1943 thriller to be his personal favorite among his own films, and although it's not as popular as some of Hitchcock's later work, it's certainly worthy of the master's admiration. Scripted by playwright Thornton Wilder and inspired by the actual case of a 1920's serial killer known as "The Merry Widow Murderer," the movie sets a tone of menace and fear by introducing a psychotic killer into the small-town comforts of Santa Rosa, California. That's where young Charlie (Teresa Wright) lives with her parents and two younger siblings, and where murder is little more than a topic of morbid conversation for their mystery-buff neighbor (Hume Cronyn). Charlie was named after her favorite uncle, who has just arrived for an extended visit, and at first Uncle Charlie (Joseph Cotten) gets along famously with his admiring niece. But the film's chilling prologue has already revealed Uncle Charlie's true identity as the notorious Merry Widow Murderer, and the suspense grows almost unbearable when young Charlie's trust gives way to gradual dread and suspicion. Through narrow escapes and a climactic scene aboard a speeding train, this witty thriller strips away the façade of small-town tranquility to reveal evil where it's least expected. However, there are a few advantages associated with hiring a service to do it for you.
There are a few different companies that you can go through - both at local commercial service stores as well as on the Internet - that will provide these VHS to DVD services for you. The purpose of this article is to shed some light on a few of the common and uncommon services that you can enjoy by going the commercial conversion route:
* Creating DVD Menus
Most of the conversion services that you will find can add in chapter menus as part of their services when they transfer your VHS tapes to DVD format. The use of these chapter menus will make it easier for you to navigate and select specific moments in time either set by 5-10 minute standard intervals, or by specific events or "scenes" in your video. The standard option isn't very flexible or content-specific, but it is helpful to improve navigation for most uses.
It can be a little more difficult to find a service that will offer a custom chapter placement, so you will want to ask about this type of service in advance if this is what you are interested in doing.
* Putting Cassettes Together
You can hold approximately 2 hours of video on a standard 4.7 gigabyte DVD, so there may come a time when you want to put two 1 hour VHS tapes onto on DVD disc. If you have special editing requirements or if you want to put more than 2 VHS tapes onto a DVD, you will need to do some research to find a company that will offer these custom services.
* Working with High Quality Video
If you need this type of work done you may have to look hard to find a VHS to DVD company that will offer this service to their customers. The video that is on a DVD works by utilizing complex algorithms to help compress the video in order for it to fit properly on the DVD disc. * Fixing Nonfunctional Cassettes
Part of the reason that people embraced the DVD conversion so heartily was because of the fragility associated with VHS tapes - primarily the way VHS players used to "eat" tapes and ruin them. If you have a VHS tape that was damaged in this way, some service companies actually have the tools and the ability to repair or even rebuild your damaged tape.
However, if you decide to get your VHS tape repaired, there are some things you should know. First, if the tape itself is actually broken, you will most likely lose anywhere between a few seconds and a few minutes of video due to the way it needs to be spliced back together for repair - there's just no getting around it. If the case for the VHS cartridge has been damaged, the service will need to transfer over the entire inner tape mechanism to a new cartridge.
It may seem like you could just splice the tape back together yourself or superglue the cartridge back in one piece, for this type of work it really is best to hire someone to do it for you to ensure that it is done properly. If you were to try to repair a broken cassette yourself, again it would be easier for the service to transfer the tape into an empty cassette housing in part because they have empty cassettes on hand for this type of work.
* Should You DIY or Not?
Plenty of people choose to hire a professional service to convert, repair and customize their videos when they transfer VHS tapes to DVD discs instead of trying to do it themselves. When you take on the task of converting VHS video tapes to DVD discs, it can be very time-consuming, especially if you have a large library of tapes, making it more of a huge project than just a simple task. Additionally, if you have extra needs or want to add in special features to your tapes, it is probably in your best interest to just go ahead and hire a service to take care of all those details for you. Unless you have all the right equipment, the experience and the time to do it, you will probably find that hiring someone to convert and customize your VHS video collection is the best option.

The term "custom services" is very broad and covers a lot of areas such as chapter placement, adding captions, special menu options and specific editing requirements. Through no fault of their own, the spacemen became prisoners of the heroic images the government created for them in order to capture the public's imagination. The casting is inspired; the film features Sam Shepard as the legendary Yeager, Ed Harris as John Glenn, Dennis Quaid as "Gordo" Cooper, Scott Glenn as Alan Shepard, Fred Ward as Gus Grissom, Scott Wilson as Scott Crossfield, and Pamela Reed and Veronica Cartwright are superb in their thankless roles as astronauts' wives. --Jim Emerson

DMP-BDT100 - A Quick Overview of New "Cheaper" Panasonic 3D Blu-Ray Player

Panasonic came out with two new 3D Blu-ray Players in 2010, the DMP-BDT300 ($399.00) and the DMP-BDT350 ($429.99). While these are great 3D Blu-ray Players, Panasonic has released yet another new 3D capable Blu-ray Player, the DMP-BDT100. Listed at $249.95, the player, is a nice alternative to the higher priced 3D Blu-ray Players. While being a step down from the higher end models, the DMP-BDT100 still has a good combination of functions and features. Including excellent features that bring you great quality in both audio and visuals.
The 3D player has a smart, sleek looking design made up of a black finish and a silver strip running through the middle of the player. It does have a flap on the front of the panel that when lowered reveals a USB Port, SD Card Slot and some control buttons. This flap of course has to remain open when using the USB Port. The overall design is reminiscent of most Panasonic players, with the exception of the 3D Full HD logo located on the front.
VIDEO QUALITY: The DMP-BDT100 has the standard video connections of HDMI, Component Outputs and Composite Outputs. Unfortunately, unlike the higher end players, the DMP-BDT100 does not have dual HDMI 1.4 outputs, only a single. With a second HDMI output you can send the 3D video signal straight to your 3D TV via the HDMI 1.4 output and send your audio to your Audio/Video receiver via the HDMI 1.3 output.
While lacking this feature, the DMP-BDT100 single HDMI Output still handles both 1080p/24 and 1080p/60 video output resolutions. Like other Panasonic players, the DMP-BDT100 uses PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus. This helps to greatly improve the color accuracy of your images. There is also the new P4HD Enhanced Full HD Upsampling. Taking standard DVDs and displaying them to near High Definition quality. Along with these features you have a few preset picture modes, user defined settings and some noise reduction modes, all design to give you the kind of image you want.
AUDIO QUALITY:Audio connections for the DMP-BDT100 include HDMI, optical Digital and 2.0-channel Analog Outputs. If you are looking for 7.1-channel Analog outputs, you will find them in the two higher end players, DMP-BDT300 and DMP-BDT350. The only way to produce the highest quality 7.1-ch surround sound is via HDMI. There is on board decoding for the high resolution audio formats, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. It can pass these audio formats in their native bitstream form over a HDMI connection to your Audio/Video receiver, if you want them decoded externally. The player is not without its audio adjustment; there is dialog enhancement and you can choose various sound effect modes such as Night Surround or Re-master 1, 2, and 3.
BD, DVD, CD audio, AVCHD, Divx Plus HD, MKV, MP3 and JPEG playback are all supported by the DMP-BDT100. Playback of media files can be done through the SD Card slot or USB port. The USB port, located on the front panel, can also be used to connect a wireless LAN adapter for easy connection to the internet. There is an Ethernet Port located on the rear of the player if you choose a wired connection. But once connected to your Home Network you can access Online Streaming Services, DLNA media devices and BD-Live content.
However, when accessing BD-Live content you require at least 1GB of external storage memory from either a SD Card or USB flash drive. The DMP-BDT100 is lacking internal storage memory. It does have a sufficient Online Streaming Media Service in VIERA Cast. Giving you access to Amazon Video on Demand, Netflix, YouTube™, Dailymotion, Bloomberg, Picasa™ and other Internet web sites.
The 3D player is DLNA certified as well. But it will only playback media store on a networked Panasonic recorder. Video, music and Photos from your PC can not be accessed. On a more positive side, the DMP-BDT100 has a 0.5 Second Quick Start mode for very fast booting. Over all the DMP-BDT100 offers you a great alternative to the more pricey Panasonic 3D Blu-ray Players. You may lack some features, but the DMP-BDT100 3D Blu-ray Player should provide you with a very pleasant Blu-ray experience.
THE PROS: The Panasonic DMP-BDT100 Blu-ray Player supports Full HD 3D Playback, as well as 1080p/24 playback of 2D Blu-ray Discs. It has great audio, providing you with internal audio decoding and bitstream output for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. It also has support for Wi-Fi, BD-Live, VIERA Cast (Online Streaming) and DLNA streaming (Only from Panasonic Recorders).
THE CONS: The Blu-ray Player lacks the dual HTMI Outputs that will transmit two separate signals to your 3DTV and A/V receiver. It has no multi-channel analog audio outputs. Wi-Fi requires a USB LAN adapter that is sold separately. The player has no internal memory, so an external device such as a SD Card or USB flash drive is needed for accessing BD-Live content. DLNA streaming is limited.
THE FINAL WORD: The Panasonic DMP-BDT100 Blu-ray Player provides great HD audio and image quality. It has many great Blu-ray functions and features such as VIERA Cast, Wi-Fi 'Ready', BD-Live and of course 3D capability. The DMP-BDT-100 is considerably less expensive than Panasonic's other 3D Blu-ray Players. Wings [VHS] (1927) Overview

Wings, the first movie to win an Academy Award for Best Picture and the only silent film to win, is still remarkably enjoyable to watch. The story is a fairly conventional one--two flyboys, both in love with the same girl, go off to fight World War I, and male bonding and heartbreak ensue. It's a perfectly serviceable plot, except for the key logical flaw that both young men have inexplicably fallen in love with the boring girl down the street and have somehow failed to notice that Clara Bow is the girl next door. Both male leads really flew their airplanes, and the dogfight footage is still spectacular. The main reason to watch Wings, though, is to see the difference between an actor and a movie star. There are many actors in the film, but only two movie stars. Clara Bow is a treat to watch every minute she's on screen, and young Gary Cooper in a tiny role nearly walks away with the movie, mostly by standing there and looking dreamy. It's well worth sitting through a little cheesy organ music for a movie this much fun. --Ali Davis

The speaker is Don Birnam (Ray Milland), a handsome, talented, articulate alcoholic. The writing team of producer Charles Brackett and director Billy Wilder pull no punches in their depiction of Birnam's massive weekend bender, a tailspin that finds him reeling from his favorite watering hole to Bellevue Hospital. Location shooting in New York helps the street-level atmosphere, especially a sequence in which Birnam, a budding writer, tries to hock his typewriter for booze money. He desperately staggers past shuttered storefronts--it's Yom Kippur, and the pawnshops are closed. Milland, previously known as a lightweight leading man (he'd starred in Wilder's hilarious The Major and the Minor three years earlier), burrows convincingly under the skin of the character, whether waxing poetic about the escape of drinking or screaming his lungs out in the D.T.'s sequence. Wilder, having just made the ultra-noir Double Indemnity, brought a new kind of frankness and darkness to Hollywood's treatment of a social problem. At first the film may have seemed too bold; Paramount Pictures nearly killed the release of the picture after it tested poorly with preview audiences. Samsung seems to be giving us every opportunity to get ready for the 3D trend in Home Entertainment. Along with its recent introduction of 3DTVs, Samsung has produced a great line up of 3D Blu-ray Players. The BD-C5900 Blu-ray Player is the entry level model that is Wireless LAN 'Ready', has internal decoding of Dolby and DTS soundtracks and access to Samsung Apps for streaming online content. Providing you with innovative features at a very reasonable and affordable price.
The BD-C5900 Blu-ray Player is only 1.7 inches thick, with a a stylish black high glossy finish. The control buttons, once powered on, will light up; making them easier to use. The buttons are located on the right side of the player. The Blu-ray 3D logo on top of the player also glows once the player is turned on. There is a USB Port just below the power button on the right. On the left side of the player is the disc loading tray.
VIDEO QUALITY: The Samsung BD-C5900 Blu-ray Player will provide you with great images. Video connections include HDMI (ver 1.4), Component Video Output and Composite Video Outputs. It has internal audio decoding for Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD Master Audio. The player can also, transmit the audio in bitstream if you want the audio decoding done by your A/V receiver. However, it does not have 7.1 analog outputs, so those with older non-HDMI A/V receivers, the BD-C5900 may not be the best option.
The BD-C5900 Blu-ray Player is one of the rare entry level models that is equipped with the new video processing technology that supports 3D playback. It can provide great high definition 3D images found on 3D Blu-ray discs. Of course you will require a 3DTV and 3D glasses in order to enjoy 3D entertainment at home. THE CONS: To enjoy 3D at home, you will need to have a 3D TV and 3D glasses. It is only WI-FI 'Ready', so you have to purchase a wireless LAN Adapter. No internal memory for Storage and to access BD-Live content. A USB external memory device is needed.
THE FINAL WORD: The Samsung BD-C5900 3D Blu-ray Player provides great audio and video quality. It has great features such as Online Streaming and DLNA support. When faced with the need to buy a new television, one of the first questions that may come to mind is, "Should I buy an LCD television?" There are pros and cons to this decision, including issues of size, clarity, space, and longevity of the product. Can I use it with my current auxiliary devices like my CD player and VCR?
Exactly what is an LCD TV? LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. This is the same technology that has been used for some time for camera screens and cell phones. It is constructed of two panels of glass-like material, which are bonded together. One layer is coated with a special polymer which contains the liquid crystals. An electrical current is run through the crystals which can turn dark or allow light to pass through, thus creating the picture.
The difference between LCD TV's and plasma TV's is not readily apparent. They look quite similar, but use entirely different technology. A plasma TV is made up of cells, which have been injected with a gas called neon-xenon. When electricity is applied to the cell, red, green and blue phosphors are struck. Each of these is called a pixel, and together they comprise the picture.
Until recently, LCD TV's have been more popular in the smaller sized televisions. This is partly because technology caused the prices of the larger screens to be much more expensive than the smaller sets. However, technology is constantly improving and now there is less of a price difference, making the large-screen sets more available to the average consumer.
Many consumers wonder if they can use their LCD TV as a computer monitor. Most of them can be, due to the fact that LCD TV's are an outgrowth of the LCD computer monitor. The majority of TVs have the VGA input connections necessary to be integrated into a PC. Gamers like to integrate their PC and game systems in order to have a large screen to play their games on.
You may have older auxiliary devices such as a VCR, and wonder if they are compatible with the LCD televisions. They will work together, since most LCD televisions have standard AV connections. However, a VHS tape, with its lower resolution and poorer color quality, will not look as good on an LCD TV as it did on a smaller analogue television.
Although LCD TV's have internal speakers, many buyers prefer to integrate their TV with a home theater system for the best all-around experience. Decide ahead of time where you would like to place your new TV in order to purchase a stand or cabinet. Ensure that you have the correct cables and a surge protection device to guard against a power surge.
An LCD television is a wise choice. The LCD panels are quite thin, and take up little space. They use less power than a conventional or a plasma TV. In addition they have a bright, clear image, and a long-life expectancy of 60,000 hours or more.

As it is, the episodic story about the romantic dilemmas experienced by a group of graduating high school seniors remains fresh, fun, and incredibly imaginative. The young, animated cast also deserves a lot of credit, bringing chemistry and energy to otherwise bland material. John Travolta, straight from his success in Saturday Night Fever, knows his sexual star power and struts, swaggers, sings, and dances appropriately; while Olivia Newton-John's portrayal of virgin innocence is the only decent acting she's ever done. And then there's Stockard Channing, spouting sexual double-entendres as Rizzo, the bitchy, raunchy leader of the Pink Ladies, who steals the film from both of its stars. In the restaurant world, a patron who is banned for life is said to have been "86'd." I have no idea where this came from, but it means don't you dare step foot in that eatery again!
I learned it as a worldly-wise busboy, 15 years of age.
But I don't think I've ever seen someone else being 86'd, but the other day it happened to me.
I asked a video place to transfer a European video I had, with a non VHS format, to DVD. They did it--sort of. It couldn't play on my TV's, so I asked them to try again, or give me a refund.
The proprietor flipped out, saying I had an obsolete machine, but heck, it's a two -year old Sony, so he was wrong. Anyway, we settled on the idea of him putting it on VHS, instead, and he said a condition of doing so is that I never darken his doorstep, again.
With glee, I agreed! No problem, I thought.
Anyway, I was 86'd.
Which brings up this question: should we be able to get along with everybody, or are there acceptable levels of interpersonal communication failure that we simply must tolerate?
I made a sales presentation the other day, and from the minute I said hello, I felt one guy was simply gunning for me, waiting for a chance to torpedo my proposal. Call it bad vibes, intuition, a gut feeling, bad karma, messed up chemistry--whatever--we did not hit it off.
I blame myself, because I want to get along with everybody, but again, is it possible, or just too darned perfectionistic?
In other words, can we, should we, or must we all 86 certain prospects?
I want to say, no, we shouldn't. It's a bad practice, and certainly a self-defeating practice.
I look at it this way. If car dealers, who by tradition and perhaps temperament, are hagglers over pricing, should they pity themselves because their prospects gun for them, seeking bargains, and perceiving them as liars, and crooks?
If car dealers insisted on being loved by everybody, while rejecting those who were treating them obnoxiously, they'd go broke in less than a month!
So, why should anyone else, like me, be less thick-skinned?
I don't have an answer to that, except to say, hey that's business.

This film was something of a movie stunt: writer-director Blake Edwards cast his friends and family, gave them a structure, then had them improvise the scenes before he put them into a script. The result is so amazingly flat that you'll be astonished that anyone would think they were actually doing something interesting. The plot centers on a writer (Jack Lemmon) who, in his anxiety about the onset of his 60th birthday, doesn't notice that his singer-wife (Julie Andrews) is going through a crisis of her own: a throat ailment that may be cancer. The cast, which includes both Edwards's and Lemmon's kids, flutters around them searching for a way to kick-start the plot, but we're left to watch Lemmon twittering about in the midst of a very late midlife crisis. --Marshall Fine

The humility he learns while immobilized infuses his political outlook from that point on, as he touchingly confesses to wife Eleanor (played admirably by Greer Garson, who struggles only a bit with the great lady's singular speech patterns). The film is based on Schary's play (for which Bellamy won a Tony Award), and in the film the dialogue seems rather stagy, especially in the long scenes while Roosevelt, bedridden, is off camera. But when Bellamy, with Hume Cronyn as his coarse but knowing political adviser, is center stage, we are reminded of the very human--and frail--person behind the historical tower of strength. "I feel I've had to go through the fire for some reason," he tells his wife. "Eleanor, it's a hard way to learn humility, but I've had to learn it by crawling. I know what is meant, 'You must learn to crawl, before you can walk.'" And after viewing this affecting film, so do we. --A.T. Hurley

What's a director to do? Andy Tennant's previous film was the highly enjoyable Cinderella romance Ever After, which vanished from theaters and became a video hit. Then Tennant made this gorgeous, nonmusical version of Anna and the King, and once again felt the sting of box-office failure. Both films deserved better, and this Anna is certain to eventually find the appreciative audience that eluded it in theaters. In many ways, this delightful costume romance transcends the latter-day quaintness of The King and I to offer a more lavish and rewarding version of the story of Anna Leonowens, based on her diaries and first told in Margaret Landon's 1944 novel.
In an otherwise admirable performance (although many felt her miscast), Jodie Foster struggles with her Victorian accent as Anna, the grieving widow who arrives in Siam in 1860 with her young son. Having accepted a post as tutor for the many children of the polygamous King Mongkut (Chow Yun-Fat), Anna finds herself drawn to the progressive monarch, whose passions swirl in a turbulent political climate. If the chemistry isn't entirely there, this culture clash still has plenty of regal charm, and Luciana Arrighi's production design is appropriately magnificent. Humor and politics are given equal measure, and Chow Yun-Fat is arguably the most endearing king to date--powerful yet tender, forceful but anguished by the heavier burdens of leadership. Bai Ling's intense performance as the tragic lover Tuptim adds emotional depth to one of the most underrated films of 1999. --Jeff Shannon

It made stars of Hanks, Daryl Hannah, and John Candy and an A-list director out of Howard. Hannah is a mermaid who comes to Manhattan in search of Hanks, the guy she has twice saved from drowning. Hanks runs a business with his lovable blowhard brother (Candy), whose goal in life is to have a letter published in Penthouse. When this perfect woman shows up, Hanks can't believe his luck and plunges into a dizzyingly romantic relationship, unaware of her sea-water secret. But the mermaid needs to soak and unfurl her tail from time to time, which leads to complications, including her capture by the government for scientific study (what else?). Hanks is winningly charming and Hannah is a perfect match in this enjoyably high-spirited comedy, though the biggest laughs belong to Candy. --Marshall Fine

So the Beast's heart still hasn't been melted yet, and he's susceptible to the inky persuasions of Forte (Tim Curry), a malevolent pipe organ (and former music teacher to the prince). Belle is still trying to win over the Beast and decides that bringing Christmas to the castle will be the way to do it. Please control that gag reflex for this does work remarkably well, and though entirely unnecessary and certainly not a complement to the original, it doesn't tarnish its good name. --Keith Simanton

Blu-ray technology has, without doubt, revolutionized the way we experience movies and games. The release of Nascar 2011: The Game is going to be one of the hottest Nascar racing games of all time. I am personally very excited about this racing game coming out because I own a Wii gaming system and the only Nascar game for Wii so far is Nascar Kart Racing which I have not had the opportunity to play yet. This game is not only being released for the Wii but it will also be available for Playstation and Xbox systems as well. That means everyone will be able to join in on the fun that this game provides. Here are some things that I think are going to be a lot of fun about this game.
One thing that I really like about Nascar 2011 is the option to play as yourself or to play as one of your favorite race car drivers. This puts you in the driver's seat beating and banging into the other drivers on the track. It also allows you to be one of the real-world drivers that you like to cheer for on Sundays which means that you can get a little bit of payback against a driver that you do not like.
Another feature that I like about this Nascar game is how detailed the graphics are. When I went over and watched the game trailer I noticed that the damages that were done to the cars while racing were very realistic looking, and the wrecks that occur are some of the most extreme that have ever been experienced in a racing video game on any system.
Something else that I think is really cool is the multi-player mode that allows you to compete against other players online. This is something that I like to have with any game that I play, but I especially love it with racing games. I will be able to take my player, put him on the track with all of the other online players and battle it out to see who has the best driving skills.
There are a lot of other features of Nascar 2011: The Game that I could go on and on talking about, but you get the idea that this is going to be the best Nascar racing game of all time. If you have a Wii system I am sure to see you on the track if you are playing in online mode.

The Palace Builder is a building simulation game set in the romantic upper class world of French aristocracy. You will design and manage the construction of the most beautiful structures in the kingdom. Will your work attract the attention of the Queen, or will a secret destroy your chances for fame and fortune?
Young Gabrielle has always been fascinated by architecture and the construction of beautiful buildings and landscapes. Unfortunately, when her father tried to apprentice her to a master architect, the master refused because she was a girl. Not one to give up, Gabrielle's father devised a plan to dress her up as a boy and managed to get the master architect to accept "Gabriel" as his new apprentice.
Now that Gabrielle is able to learn from a master, she has to quickly learn everything she can, and show just how good an architect she can be. And that's where you come in; your task is to help her design and build the best palaces as she slowly works her way towards more complicated designs and bigger commissions from the cream of the French aristocracy. And who knows... maybe she will get to design and build a palace for the Queen some day. That is if her cover doesn't get blown and her deception gets revealed first!
The Palace Builder is a "town" builder similar to the Build-A-Lot series, but with many unique things going for it. In normal town-building games, each map has a grid that you need to build houses on. In The Palace Builder, each plot of land you get is an open area where you can design and build your dream palace any which way you want.
The worker and resource management for The Palace Builder is slightly more complicated as well. There are gardeners who are used to build and maintain gardens, drafters to draw up plans for buildings, builders to construct the buildings, and sculptors to create appealing decorations and ornaments. There are also 4 different types of resources that you need to keep an eye on.
At each level, you have a plot of land to build on, and a set of objectives you need to complete. These objectives include building a set number of certain buildings, and also how much appeal your entire palace plot generates. Appeal is how beautiful the place is and how much the neighbors like it, and is earned when you complete buildings and decorations. Generally the more expensive and long the construction is, the more appeal the structure generates. Achieving enough appeal each level allows Gabrielle to complete a section of her own palace as well.
When you start the game, you only have access to the most basic of structures including a chateau, stables, gardens and fountains. As you progress, you will gain access to a whole variety of structures with which to decorate your plot and increase its appeal. You have to be careful though; many of the structures have multiple stages of construction, each with different resource and worker requirements.
The graphics in The Palace Builder are not fantastic; it feels slightly dated with its 2 dimensional art compared to other contemporary games which boast stunning 3D visuals. However, it does add a few touches that make it enjoyable. While you are planning and constructing your palaces, you will get animations of the French aristocracy enjoying the results of your work. The ladies will be quietly strolling around or having a picnic, while the men will be dueling each other with their swords all around your gardens and statues.
Overall, this game is a step in the right direction for town-building simulation games. In other town-building games, you are either allowed to construct buildings only in specific plots, or need to demolish roads to change the landscape, or are restricted in building placement due to efficiency issues. The freeform design and construction in The Palace Builder is a nice change that will appeal to gamers who like to create aesthetically pleasing works of art!

This is a 65-minute reissue of a 1988 video that features Janet Jones-Gretzky, who is so slim that you can count her ribs through her white leotard, leading a class of fit, gorgeous exercisers (female and male). This aerobic interval workout combines fast cardio (no patterns) with more controlled cardio plus weights, though still at a fast pace. We've learned a lot about exercise since 1988, and these two-second reps with weights are not as effective as slower reps. They are also more likely to lead to injury. Although the video is targeted to all levels, unless you're an experienced exerciser, it's too easy to lose correct form when you're doing such fast reps and aerobic moves at the same time. You might find the weight intervals repetitious (tons of lunges and shoulder presses). A floor-work segment uses ankle weights, followed by a stretch. In this article, I will give you a realistic approach on how much money you can get paid to play video games.
First of all, you can earn as much -- or as little -- as you want. The fact of the matter is, if you want to earn more, you just have to work more and build up a reputation as a high-quality video game tester. If you can do that, you will not be limited to the amount of games you can test. In reality, you'll only be limited to the amount of jobs you can handle, as well as by the time you can devote to this.
Many people test video games in their spare time, as a way to earn some extra cash on the side. Those part-timers usually feel that it ruins the gaming experience if they test too many hours a week. Other people, however, are more motivated and work up to 60 to 80 hours a week doing this for money. For them, the paychecks will be significantly larger and much more pleasing to the eye.
In addition, your reputation matters as well. If you can provide high-quality feedback and become known as a game tester who works hard and always completes every assignment handed to him, then naturally you will qualify for more jobs and command a higher testing fee.
At the same time, your skill level will also help determine how much money you earn per hour. If you're able to go through a game very quickly and beat it without much effort, then you can devote drastically lower amounts of time to your game testing. In layman's terms: the better you are at playing video games, the more money you can make every hour as a paid game tester.
So even though most gamers will never make $300 an hour, it is very possible to make at least $40-$80 an hour testing games for companies. Anyway you slice it, that's not a bad fee for testing and playing video games all day long.

I have been putting up with prerecorded television on its traditional formats for years now.
I guess that it would have been around 3 or 4 years ago when I decided that I could do without the VHS, it was a sad day saying goodbye to some of the movies I owned on Video Cassette but it was a relief to not only lose the necessity to store these bible sized monsters in the house, but also to remove the triple wired dinosaur form the living room. Well this old relic of my youth had been replaced with a normal DVD player and soon my DVD collection started in earnest.
The trouble is that I don't really want to store large items of digital media anymore. My music has all been compressed down into 320kbps mp3, my photos are all now burned onto DVD's and stored in triplicate.
So I start converting my DVD's and ripping them onto my hard drive. trouble is that before long I have almost 60 Gig of movies and really I prefer to watch them on my TV than on the PC screen.Then a solution occurs to me, a complete home entertainment solution.
I needed mass storage and it was only going to be a matter of time before I found a solution.
There it was, a DVD hard disc recorder which could like do everything I wanted and here it is a:Philips Hard Disc DVD Recorder with 250gig hard drive.
First I networked it into my PC and dragged across 80 Gig of movies in DivX format ( that is about 100 films ). Next my photos for the past few years ( some 30 Gig ) were imported followed by 30 Gig of music in mp3 format to join the party.
Next I hooked up the DVDr recorder to my TV ( sadly I am not yet an owner of a flatscreen TV but that is surely only a matter of time ) and piped the excellent audio connection to my home hifi.
The results are superb, even though I have not even explored this unit's impressive recording capacity - and it is capable of that lovely Video Plus thing - I have now a complete home media centre at a very attractive price.

"Something familiar, something peculiar, something for everyone: a comedy tonight!" Those words from the opening song pretty much describe the menu in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, a frantic adaptation of the stage musical by Larry Gelbart and Burt Shevelove. The wild story, set in ancient Rome, follows a slave named Pseudolus (Zero Mostel, snorting and gibbering) as he tries to extricate himself from an increasingly farcical situation; Mostel and a bevy of inspired clowns, including Phil Silvers, Jack Gilford, and Buster Keaton, keep the slapstick and the patter perking. The cast also includes the young Michael Crawford as a love-struck innocent. This project landed in the lap of Richard Lester, then one of the hottest directors in the world after his success with the Beatles' films. Lester telescoped the material through his own joke-a-second sensibility, and also ripped out some of the songs from Stephen Sondheim's Broadway score. The result is a pixilated romp and very close to the vaudeville spirit suggested by the title--though anyone with a low tolerance for Zero Mostel's overbearing buffoonery may be in trouble. Oddly enough, amidst all the frenzy, Lester creates a grungy, earthy Rome that seems closer to the real thing than countless respectable historical films on the subject. --Robert Horton

BRAVEHEART (1995) won 5 Oscars including the Best Film and Best Director awards for Mel Gibson. It was also nominated for 5 more Oscars including the Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen, penned by Randall Wallace.
William Wallace, played by Mel Gibson, is a "reluctant hero" from 13th century Scotland in the classic mythological mold described by Joseph Campbell in his Hero With a Thousand faces.
All Wallace wants to do is marry, become a farmer like his father and carry on in peace. He is a reluctant hero. But things change after his wife is slaughtered by the local men of King of England Edward the 1st -- Edward the Longshanks.
His fate forces Wallace to take on both the King of England and the Scottish landed nobility who flip sides at the drop of a hat. His desire to take his wife's revenge and set Scotland free sets him on a war path that leads to his eventual capture and public death under torture. (For trivia fans -- the COMPASSION OF CHRIST is NOT the first movie in which Gibson is stretched across a crucifix.) Yet Wallace's legacy survives his beheading and sets Scotland free in the 14th century.
Fantastic musical score with irresistible bagpipes, married to equally fantastic scenery and battle scenes jarring in their ferocity and realism, make it a good watch indeed. Wallace's last word under torture is a long scream -- "Freeeedom!" Who can remain impartial to that?
The gravel-voiced Patrick MacGoohan who plays Edward 1st is as good as Gibson since he makes a very credible foe to whip the dramatic tension nonstop throughout the film. Without a nemesis as amoral, tricky and dangerous as Edward Longshanks, Wallace's goodness and integrity would not stand out in such high relief.

Disney couldn't resist the temptation to remake 1961's popular comedy The Absent Minded Professor, so they cast Robin Williams as Professor Philip Brainard (a role vaguely related to the character originated by Fred MacMurray), and the result is a comedy that, frankly, doesn't fully deserve its modest success. It's admittedly clever to a point, and certainly the digitally "flubberized" special effects provide the kind of movie magic that's entertaining for kids and parents alike. The professor can't even remember his own wedding day (much to the chagrin of his fiancée, played by Marcia Gay Harden), and now his academic rival (Christopher McDonald) is trying to steal his latest and purely accidental invention--flying rubber, or ... flubber. The green goo magnifies energy and can be used as an amazing source of power, but in the hands of screenwriter John Hughes it becomes just another excuse to recycle a lot of Home Alone-style slapstick humor involving a pair of bumbling would-be flubber thieves. There's also a floating robot named Weebo and some catchy music by Danny Elfman to accompany dancing globs of flubber, but the story's too thin to add up to anything special. Lightweight fun, but, given the title, it lacks a certain bounce. Of course, that didn't stop Disney's marketing wizards from turning it into a home video hit. Jeff Shannon

Wicked, nasty, delicious fun. Laurence Olivier is a wealthy, veddy English mystery writer. He invites Michael Caine to his elaborate country house, in order to settle some rather unpleasant business between them: Caine is having an affair with Olivier's wife, and she is about to divorce the older man. Olivier, smooth as brandy, suggests that there might be a way the two men can help each other, but what appears to be an intriguing proposition escalates into a deadly cat-and-mouse game. Sleuth boasts a twisty script by Anthony Shaffer, calculated to drive an audience to distraction; and director Joseph L. Mankiewicz (All About Eve) shows a keen eye for the telling detail. But the real fun is watching Olivier and Caine go at each other hammer and tongs, a virtuoso wrestling match between two splendid actors (both were Oscar-nominated, but lost to Marlon Brando in The Godfather). Capture Your VHS Onto DVD

One of the more interesting technologies that can be used in the home for converting VHS to DVD service is video capture. This process allows a VCR to be connected directly to a computer that is equipped with a DVD burner. The content of the VHS tape is played while software running on the computer captures video and audio feeds and stores them for editing before burning to DVD.
The hardware involved is relatively simple. Almost all new computers are equipped with DVD burners and DVD burning software. A capture card is a device that takes the composite signal from the VCR, meaning it receives video and audio separately, and translates it into a digital file that is loaded onto the computer via a USB port.
Some additional software is required beyond the DVD burning software that comes with the computer. This software translates the analog signal from the VCR into a digital format that is stored on the hard drive temporarily. The digital file can then be opened and edited to improve the quality of the video and restore sound. Once the editing is completed, the file can be burned to a DVD.
Many people who are unfamiliar with this type of VHS to DVD transfer become concerned by the sheer size of the digital files that are captured off their VHS tapes. What they do not realize, is that the software takes this incredibly large files, some up to 14 GB, and compresses them into a format that is readable by standard DVD players, yet takes up much less space. Upgrading your entertainment system? DVD players have long since replaced video cassette players when it comes to watching movies at home and set top boxes and digital tuners will become the norm with the current national roll out of digital TV. Meanwhile, the introduction of 3D TVs is poised to take living room entertainment to a whole new level.
One of the most advanced technologies in digital entertainment has already been around for a number of years. Blu-ray discs were first introduced to the consumer market in 2003 as the advanced form of digital information storage. Seven years onwards, their popularity has increased but the bluray is still a comparative minority to standard DVD players - December polls suggest that 1 in 10 Australian households own a bluray player and consumer understanding of the technology was remarkably low.
Blu ray discs - understanding the difference
Blu ray players were made available on the Australian market over two years ago, and is now gathering steam as the high definition image player of choice. The main difference between blu ray discs and standard DVDs is the image quality - blu-ray discs offer a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, while DVD is limited to a 720 x 480 resolution. Beyond pixel resolution, Blu-ray also uses better video-compression methods for sharper contrast and more vibrant colours. Audio quality is also improved and blu ray offers unique interactive features such as pop-up menu displays and picture-in-picture commentary.
The major drawback to upgrading to blu ray is the price. The machines themselves cost quite a bit more than the average DVD player (which are now priced as low as $100). The media itself also tends to be more expensive, the average blu-ray movie can cost around 4 times that of a DVD and many older titles are also not yet available in this format. Many users have also noticed considerable differences in loading time for blu ray media.
If you are considering upgrading to bluray, one of the advantages is backwards compatibility - every bluray player is capable of playing back standard DVDs, so you won't have to replace your entire video collection.
What about HD DVD?
For a brief period of time, Toshiba had introduced another high definition format, the HD DVD. What resulted was a "format war" over which type of media would become the standard for HD media. However, in 2008, Toshiba officially pulled out of the "war: and announced that it would discontinue HD DVD production. This has cleared the way for bluray to be the preferred high definition media of choice and most new release titles are available as both blu ray & DVDs.

Convert VHS to DVD

You have several options to convert VHS to DVD. Let's look at them one by one and then you'll be ready to choose the one that's best for you.
Combo Units
If you own a combination DVD and VCR player/recorder, available almost any place where electronics are sold, it's almost painless to pop in the VHS tape and a blank DVD, press a few buttons and directly record the old tape to a shiny new DVD disc. (A slight variant on this method is to connect your VCR to a separate DVD recorder unit.) If you don't need to modify the video at all (editing, adding chapters and custom menus), this method is the easiest and most direct.
Using a Video Camera
Just about any video camera (camcorder) can serve as the tool to help you copy directly from your old VCR into a digital format. Usually it just requires hooking up a cable (may need to be purchased separately) from the VCR's Video Out port (the red, white, yellow connectors) to the Video In port on the camera and pressing a few buttons. Each camera works a bit differently, so follow the instructions in your video camera's manual for recording from an auxiliary input. This is a slow process because it is a re-recording of what is on the tape to the new DVD format, but it is fairly simple and requires no additional hardware if you already own a video camera.
Using a Black Box
Special devices like DVD Xpress or Instant DVD from ADSTech make it easy to transfer directly from VHS tape to a DVD disc. Basically, this is an external device that takes the place of the video camera in the previous scenario. You connect the VCR to the device with a standard red/white/yellow cable and then connect the device to your computer with a USB cable. These devices may be more cost effective than a video camera (about US$100) and a little easier to use.

What Hardware and Software Do I Need?
Most computers sold in the last few years (Windows or Mac) will have the basic system requirements needed for dealing with the digital version of your VHS recording. You should have a Pentium 4 or higher, 1GB or more of RAM and at least 10GB of hard drive space available.
Oh, and a DVD burner of course, and a stack of blank DVD discs. Some computers have combination CD/DVD drives, which may or may not be able to burn a DVD. Don't assume that because you can burn a CD, you can also burn a DVD. Consult the documentation if you're not sure. If you need a DVD burner, the external USB-connected models are very easy to connect.

The Low-Tech Solution
A final option for those who don't care to dirty their hands with wires, bits and bytes is a service bureau. Many services offer to receive your VHS tapes by mail and return it with a DVD equivalent. How Long Do DVDs Last?
All that I've read indicates the expected longevity of dye-based DVD discs is anywhere from 20 to 250 years. Some formulations (notably phthalocyanine) are more stable and last longer, so look for those when purchasing DVD discs. However, many manufacturers don't list this on the packaging; so just be aware that some of the el-cheapo DVD discs may last just a few years, and buy quality name-brand discs.
There have been some confusing reports published recently, notably the claim by a guy from IBM Germany that CD and DVD discs will last only 2-5 years. This report has been WIDELY criticized and so far I haven't seen ANYONE come out in support of it. Nonetheless, popular news media (online and offline) trumpet it as fact and then mass confusion ensues...
As far as I'm concerned, the National Institute of Standards and Technology's report on CD/DVD Care & Handling is the most authoritative and accurate source of information on the subject of CD/DVD life expectancy. In that report, they say:
...there is consensus that, under recommended storage conditions, CD-R, DVD-R, and DVD+R discs should have a life expectancy of 100 to 200 years or more; CD-RW, DVD-RW discs should have a life expectancy of 25 years or more.
The useful life span of CD and DVD discs is affected by temperature, humidity, exposure to light and day-to-day use. So keep your DVDs in a cool, dry place, avoid direct exposure to sunlight, and they should last for several decades.

Dances With Wolves [VHS] Best Review

My college-aged son had never seen Dances with Wolves, and I hadn't seen it since I saw in the theaters in 1990, so many years ago. DWW is still a howlingly good movie. Its sweeping vistas of pristine western landscapes and magnificent depiction of life among the Sioux give a reasonable portrayal of what life might have been like on the American Plains before whites took over the place. The story? Kevin Costner plays Colonel Dunbar, who as a reward for a questionable act of bravery during the Civil War, choses to live in the remotest "fort" he could find. The place is a devastated mess, with animal carcasses choking the waterway and signs of a desperation and flight everywhere. As Dunbar sets to bring some military order to the place, he encounters some of the local Sioux who live nearby. Gradually, he begins to learn their language, adopt their ways and learn to love them. And they him.

DWW is a real period piece - by which I mean that it depicts the way Americans were ready to view the "taming" of the West from the vantage of the late 20th century. The film's whites are often drunk, depraved, pointlessly violent and prodigiously wasteful. The Sioux are tough, but also intelligent, loving, resourceful and brave. That this revisionist view of history is not entirely accurate is beside the point. After decades portaying Native Americans as crazed, dirty and brutal, a sympathetic depiction of the continent's first inhabitants was long overdue. It's a measure of the degree to which the pendulum is swinging the other way that 20 years later, such sentimental views come across as cloying and naive. Even this film shows the tribe as a macho patriarchy where women are second class citizens

Still, the film's characters were strong and memorable. Stands With A Fist (a stunning the Mary McDonnell), taken into the tribe after a raid wiped out her family is the tribe's only white, and an obvious choice as a love interest for Dunbar. McDonnell's expertly depicted the difficulty of learning to speak a language that she hadn't spoken or heard for decades. Kicking Bird (Graham Greene) is Costner's mentor and protector and initiator into the ways of the Indians. Wind in his Hair is a tough fighter constantly tests and eventually befriends Dunbar. Ironically, only Costner's Dunbar seems bland and uninteresting in the midst of this wonderful cast. I couldn't help but to wonder whether Costner got an ego boost from playing the only white man in America whom the Sioux considered human.

My main beef with Dances with Wolves, now as in 1990, was the lame ending. Costner the director can't ignore the historical fact that these noble people were virtually exterminated shortly after the events depicted in the movie. The narrative arc that Costner follows - Dunbar's psychic voyage from meaningless carnage to harmonious unity -- thus collides with the reality that American history took another path. An explanatory graphic at the end lamely brings the movie to a close, interrupting the action inexplicably and leaving every story unfinished.

Nevertheless, DWW is a classic film, beautifully conceived, shot and acted. The fact that the actors who played the Sioux delivered their lines in Lakota both showed the film's respect for their culture and viewers understand the foreigness of the first encounters with them. Well worth a look, even as we reach for a more nuanced and balanced look at the colonization of the Americas.

There is a famous piece of educational research where a class of school students compare two films - the 1950s western 'Searchers', and this one, 'Dances With Wolves'. Nearly all of them believed Dances with Wolves to be the more historically accurate film even though it is about as accurate as Mel Gibson's roles in Braveheart, The Patriot (well just about any of his historical roles come to think of it).

This is not a dig at Costner, Hollywood studios or anyone else for producing such a PC pap romantic movie. Storytellers, filmmakers have always distorted history somewhat to tell a good story. The real sadness lies in our own failure of history education, leading to our ignorant credulity when hoards of us watch such films and believe they depict some kind of historical reality.

As H.L. Mencken so wisely put it. No one ever lost money underestimating the intelligence of the general public.

I get so angry when seemingly we can't get any of the really outstanding black films on DVD! This is really a shame! I want this movie for my collection and I feel pretty certain others are looking for this to come out on DVD in a format we can use in the U.S. I guess we blacks don't buy DVD's.....How stupid! While I'm at it....I am looking for these flims to come out on DVD as well. "Having Our Say" "The Learning Tree" "Sophisticated Gents" "Take A Giant Step" "Beah" A documentary about the life of actress Beah Richards. I cannot recall the correct title at the moment. Nevertheless, it makes no sense that these black films can't be released on DVD when clearly there's a market for them.

Danny Glover plays the mysterious Harry Mention, a charming trickster who invades the life of a family and who claims to have (and may very well have) a connection to dark powers. In any case, his presence sows dissent among a patriarch (Paul Butler) and his offspring, the latter more interested in the legacy of mystical wisdom Harry may represent. Based on stories of superstition he heard in youth, writer-director Charles Burnett's film is a fine and funny accomplishment that intersects dream time and linear time, and it has the heart of a folk tale. You can feel what is going on and as usual Sheryl Lee Ralph is beautiful and an excellent actress. Sheryl is so underrated. This is a family movie that you will treasure.

Pinocchio (Walt Disney Gold Classic Collection) [VHS] Best Review

I just finished seeing Pinocchio on Blu-Ray, and I am amazed. This movie is older than Citizen Kane, but it looks like a dream. I understand some people have claimed the colors have been tampered with. It is true that there was a sepia tone to the VHS and previous DVD, that is now gone. Whether that sepia tone was truly the original look of the film, I am not old enough or knowledgeable enough to say. What I do know is that the movie looks fantastic on Blu-Ray, as if it was made yesterday (though hand-drawn animation of this quality is rare these days), and I commend Disney on that.

Of course, I would not be giving a Blu-Ray five stars simply for the image quality. Many claim that Pinocchio is one of Disney's best feature films, if not the best. Unfortunately, I haven't seen many Disney feature films since the '90s when I was a kid, so I can't really compare Pinocchio to anything but fuzzy memories. But I did greatly enjoy Pinocchio. The animation is unbelievable, and the hand-painted backgrounds look wonderful. The characters are hilarious and charming. The story is of course the classic Pinocchio story based on the 1883 novel, a kind of dark morality tale, really, what with the child slavery element.

This is a perfect movie for kids, but adults should definitely watch it as well. The animation is both technically and artistically exquisite, and the movie as a whole has a charm to it that is truly special.

Sony BDP-S360 Blu-ray Player Review

Sony is the major manufacturer and pioneer of Blu-ray technology so we would expect their players to be absolutely cutting edge when it comes to the design, performance, and the features on the player. Therefore it was slightly surprising when the previous model, the BDP-S350 lacked a few of the major features that made Blu-ray so appealing.
Firstly, there was no out of the box for the BD-LIVE (Profile 2) Blu-ray profile. Although later available as a firmware update, early buyers of the player had to make do with Profile 1.1. This meant that the ability to download exclusive content and extras was not possible - bearing in mind this was one of the big selling points of Blu-ray, it was a bit of an oversight. The second feature missing was the ability to decode DTS-HD Master audio. Whilst High Definition video is the primary selling point of Blu-ray, many home cinema owner and enthusiasts are also looking to get the most out of their sound system and so high definition audio is a must, so it was again slightly strange that this feature was missing.
The lack of these features though did not stop the 350 selling in huge numbers, and it became one of the best selling Blu-ray player around, very quickly. The new Sony BDP-S360 Blu-ray player looks set to continue this amazing sales trend, and thankfully resolves the shortcomings of the previous model.
The design of the Sony BDP-S360 is much improved - it looks more like an established player now with its sleek black lines rather than the slightly cheap looking blue finish of the previous version. Even the remote manages to look better, and in typical Sony style, is very well laid out. The remote does not have an eject button which is unusual these days, but it certainly doesn't bother me.
The connection on the player do not bring up any surprises and all the sockets you need are all present - a single HDMI output, component video, and digital coaxial and optical for the sound if you need them. The rear also features a USB socket so you can plug in a USB memory stick to store any BD-LIVE downloaded content. In order to do this you will need to connect a network cable to the ethernet port on the rear - this will also enable you to download firmware updates in the future. There is no wireless option with the BDP-S360 unfortunately, although Sony have confirmed that models higher up the range will have this on board.
Blu-ray performance is as good as you would expect, and the "x.v.Color(TM)" system that Sony have included does a good job of ensuring that colours are more natural looking and vivid rather than being too garish as we saw with some older Blu-ray players.
Overall, I'm very pleased that Sony has finally bought out the player with the features that everyone was expecting, and the BDP-S360 Blu-ray player is a welcome improvement over the previous model and will grace anyone's home cinema!

They did improve the quality of the picture but only when you had them plugged in correctly. Again this cable is only intended to support analogue signals and so is NOT HDMI compatible, as signals for and from High Def equipment are digital.
So to the latest cables, designed to transfer digital signals for the most up to date range of home entertainment equipment, such as HDTV, Bluray, 1080p and 1080i cable and satellite and the latest 3DTV. Where the best of the previous generation of cables used 3 cables, HDMI cables use a total of 19 all wrapped up neatly inside one shroud. This results in a cable about the sane diameter as a USB cable, making them ideal for built in audio/video systems.
By taking those 0s and 1s, delivering them with no drop out at all, they transform a mediocre picture into the highest quality presently possible. Now if your TV, DVD player etc is not HD ready then buying these cables is a total waste of money and to be honest they would probably not have HDMI connections anyway.
My point is here, there is a big difference between the two and there is no such thing as a HDMI component cable. Before you buy HDMI cables be sure your TV has HDMI connections and if it does you would be a fool not to use them.

Mississippi Burning [VHS] Best Review

I am amazed at this average rating for this movie(4 stars?). There are movies that stink to high heaven getting 4 and 1/2 stars and even five. Incredible. Mississippi Burning is a very hard film to look at but a very truthful and gritty look at racism in southern Mississippi during the Civil Rights era.

The story details FBI agents Rupert Anderson(Gene Hackman)and Alan Ward(Willem Dafoe) search for the killers an African-American male and two Jewish males. Their search takes them to the heart of Mississippi where the racism is deep-seated and the police are inflexible to a fault. They later realize how deep the police involvement in the killings were.

No other movie about race relations has moved me like Mississippi Burning has. American History X is phenomenal but it didnt make me as angry as this movie did. I wish I had the power to stop these psychos from doing what they did. Mississippi Burning was the movie that made me question my faith in organized religion. I couldn't fathom that I was believing in the same belief system that these lunatics were believing in. I dumped belief in organized religions after extensive research at the age of 20 but this movie sparked my curiosity. Gene Hackman is wonderful as Agent Rupert. He steals every scene he is in. Willem Dafoe is great as his partner Alan Ward. Agent Anderson(Hackman) handles things in an unconventional manner while Agent Ward(Dafoe) is by the book. This is where Dafoe showed his true potential before he started screwing up his career by appearing in sewage like Speed 2, Boondock Saints, Body Of Evidence and XXX: State Of The Union. Also great in this movie is Brad Dourif as the racist Deputy Clinton Pell and R. Lee Ermey as the racist mayor. I also like how they showed the views of the average ignorant Mississippian and how the cops either participated in the killing and terrorizing of Blacks in Mississippi or sat back and watched it happen.

Conclusion: Mississippi Burning is the best movie of 1989 hands down and is definitely required viewing. But be forewarned that this is not an easy movie to watch. But if you can stomach the violence you have a gem on your hands. I find it sad that the director Alan Parker didnt have many movies after this one.

And we're put in the position of applauding the FBI's dirtiest forms of intimidation. This cheap gimmick undercuts the whole civil rights subject; it validates the terrorist methods of the Klan." Or you can take the view of Roger Ebert, who named Mississippi Burning "the best film of 1988"; it would earn seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Actor (Hackman), Supporting Actress (McDormand), and Director. Which reaction is most appropriate? Both are, depending on your particular point of view. At the very least the performances are dynamic, but there's more to this provocative film than fine acting. In 1964 three civil rights workers from the North disappear in a small Mississippi town and the FBI are sent to investigate. Agent in charge Alan Ward does everything by the book. Agent Rupert Anderson however was a Sheriff in Mississippi before joining the FBI and understands the local culture. He's also prepared to bend the rules a bit if it will help in the investigation. They focus on the Sheriff's office and Deputy Clinton Pell in particular as they think he may be the weakest link in the conspiracy. As the investigation intensifies however, the KKK launch a series of attacks against the local African-American population. With no one on either side prepared to talk, Ward agrees to Anderson using his own unorthodox methods to learn what happened that night and who killed the three men. Mississippi Burning is one of the best movies I have ever seen. It is important and it is entertaining and really has something to say.

Captivating. From the moment this concert begins, you are transported by Yanni's music. Not only that, but the performers themselves are a marvel to watch. How can so much talent fit onto one stage? The Taj Mahal, gleams in the background, as well as scenes from China, "the forbidden city". There are many instruments introduced that I've never even seen or heard before. Completely captivating. The music stayed with me for days.

Exotic locales and famous monuments! Adagios and waltzes! Spectacle and bombast! A didgeridoo and an orchestra too! Yanni's amazing hair!! All this and much more make Tribute a feast sure to be eagerly devoured by the Greek composer-keyboardist's legions of fans--and it's not hard to understand why, as it is an impressive achievement. The DVD chronicles Yanni's 1997 concerts at India's Taj Mahal (the first concert staged there) and Beijing's Forbidden City (the first-ever performance there by a Western artist), and these splendid settings are certainly shown to good effect throughout this well-directed, great-sounding program. As for the music, well, that's all a matter of taste; what might be schlocky to one person will be beautiful and majestic to another. But regardless of one's musical leanings, no one can dispute that the 90-minute concert, combining numbers from both locations, provides a healthy and representative dose of Yanni's New Age-cum-classical-cum-world music sounds, and they are well played by the international cast of nearly 50 musicians and singers (violinist Karen Briggs and guitarist Pedro Eustache acquit themselves especially well among the soloists).
And that's not all, as the DVD is loaded with bonus features. Principal among them is "No Borders, No Boundaries," a beautifully photographed, hourlong film narrated by actor Christopher Plummer; part documentary and part travelogue, it contains musician profiles, Yanni biographical material, some Indian and Chinese history, and information about how the concerts came about. Other features include a lengthy Yanni interview and discography, as well as audio options. In the end, Yanni detractors are unlikely to be converted, but then, they can always put on their Limp Bizkit CDs instead. --Sam Graham

Bad seller, dishonest, cheat!

As many previous reviewers said, this DVD is made from live performance in India's Taj Mahal and China's Forbidden City. Very bad combination. India and China just don't mix, in the sense of culture. It's that simple. Why this is the matter or why does this matter? Because this is a DVD and much is about "visual" stuff. The settings of the live performance and the editing of the DVD tried to put much ethnic or cultural elements related to the two nations. That's understandable. Landmarks like Taj Mahal and Forbbiden City mean and convey something. Unfortunately, mixing Taj Mahal and Forbidden City, with one scene of Indian people clapping their hands and the next scene of the Great Wall silhouette, causes me impulses of vomiting. For most of the people, though, India and China are just two foreign countries, "alienish" and exotic; not much difference. Both are Asian countries and oriental in sense of culture. The fact is, the cultural gap or difference of these two nations is HUGE, GIGANTIC, or whatever you'd call it, especially in the meanings conveyed through the symbolic Taj Mal and Forbbiden City. For a native from one of the nations like me, kneading Chinese and Indian together just does not work. Pair a superb wine with superb food, instead of having yet another wine (whether it's superb or not) to compete with it. Same thing for music.

In term of audio effect, I suppose it's just good.

Sneakers [VHS] Best Review

This movie is both fast paced and exciting and hilarious. At some moments you will be actually be on the edge of your seat (i.e the scene where Redford is in the office) and then there are other scenes you will be cracking up at (i.e when whistler is reading playboy for the blind).
This movie does have swearing but its definitely a movie a family can enjoy.
I would say 10+ even though its pg13.
Great plot, great screenplay, great actors, great movie!

This enjoyable thriller, written and directed by Phil Alden Robinson (the screenwriter of Field of Dreams), follows a raggedy group of corporate security experts who get in over their heads when they accept an assignment poaching some hot hardware for the National Security Agency. Robert Redford plays the group's guru, an aging techno-anarchist who has been hiding from the feds since the early 1970s; his companionable gang of freaks includes Dan Aykroyd, David Strathairn, Mary McDonnell, the late River Phoenix, and Sidney Poitier, as a veteran CIA operative turned "sneaker." The technological black box that everybody is after, an array of computer chips that can decode any encrypted message, isn't a very plausible invention, but it's a serviceable McGuffin, and the megalomania of the master plotter played by Ben Kingsley has more resonance than most. How Does a CD Player Work?

Today there is a wide range of CD players available for the consumer and choosing the right CD player can feel like an arduous task. Style, quality, design och technical solutions vary greatly between the different players. Some players are portable; others are included in larger sound systems. Some players can only handle one disc at the time; others can easily skip between 50 discs or more. Some CD players are very cheap, others are highly expensive. The list goes on and on. Regardless of which CD player you choose it will however consist of three basic parts that are found in all moderns CD players: a drive motor, a tracking device and a laser and lens system. Another thing that all CD players have in common is that they interpret data that has been stored in the form of elongated bumps on a CD (compact disc).
The drive motor in your CD player is the part that makes the disc spin round and round at a correct pace. The drive motor will gradually adjust the speed, since the correct pace depends on which part of the disc that is currently being interpreted. At some spots, the pace will be no higher than 200 rpm, while at other spots the pace needs to be increased up to 500 rpm. As the disc is rotated round and round by the drive motor, the tracking mechanism will adjust the laser assembly and make it possible for the laser and lens system to focus on the miniscule bumps where data has been stored. The laser is constantly being pushed from the centre and outward over the disc by the tracking mechanism.
The data interpreted by the laser and lens system has been stored in the form of elongated bumps on the surface of the CD. One single bump is very small and no wider than 0.5 microns. The height is greater than 125 nanometres and the length is 0.83 microns or slightly more. All these bumps are very neatly organised at the surface of the CD in the form of a 5 kilometre (3.5 miles) long spiral.
The CD itself is made up by several different layers, including a polycarbonate layer and an aluminium layer. When the laser tries to interpret data that has been stored on the CD, it will first penetrate the polycarbonate layer. The aluminium layer will then reflect the laser beam, and the light alterations will be detected by a special optoelectronic mechanism in the CD player. Since the bumps in which data has been stored reflects light in a different way compared to the areas between the bumps (commonly referred to as "lands"), the CD player can determine exactly which parts of the disc that is made up by bumps and which parts that are not.
If a CD is scratched or injured in any other way, it can be impossible for the CD player to interpret it. Sometimes only a minor part of the data will be skipped, but larger damages can render the entire CD useless. Always store your CD's in a protective casing to decrease the risk of scratches. When you clean your CD's, carefully move your hand from the centre and outwards to the edge rather than just swabbing around. Scratches that occur from a radial movement tend to be less damaging than other scratches.
