Review Used People [VHS]

Used People [VHS] Best Review

I stumbled across this movie several years ago on television (maybe a movie channel.) I instantly fell in love with it. The characters are built up beautifully and the actors and actresses chosen for the adult roles were wonderful. I will agree with others in that the little boy's portrayer was...well...not really enjoyable. I mean, I guess he was supposed to be acting strangely but I think in this case the actor was a little stranger than the character. Still, the movie is wonderful and I am patiently (or impatiently) waiting for this to be released on DVD. I am not sure what the hold up is. If you haven't seen it, and ever get the chance to, definitely give it a try.

dvd now! - matthew adelizzi - New Fairfield, CT United States
great performances. the best scene involving a plate of chicken - ever. we need a dvd asap.

A magnificent idea supported on an uneven script! - Hiram Gomez Pardo - Valencia, Venezuela
Once more, we will have the immense pleasure to watch two legends of the cinema in the peak of its creativeness. The versatile Shirley MacLaine plays the role of a recent Jewish widowed and the well educated Italian gentleman, who also lost his wife.

Nevertheless, this autumnal romance really lacks of a true narrative vertebral column and from time to time yields us to effective vignettes, that work out as a tongue in the cheek. You should remind for instance "Moonstruck" to understand plainly the problem to deal with a heavy-handed script bounded with a magnificent and a superior cast.

Fresh and funny but ultimately disappointing.

I want my DVD! - A. Steakley - Austin, Texas USA
I've loved this film for years and just came on Amazon to put it on my wish list, when to my horror I realized that it's not available on DVD! What gives?! I WANT MY DVD!

Cheap CD Duplication - A Great Way to Make Backups

Cheap CD duplication refers to the inexpensive ways to copy a CD from one to another. CD copying fuels an entire industry. There are even businesses that are dedicated to cheap CD copying.

CD duplication can occur is a few ways. The first way is the absolute cheapest. Duplicating a CD as a do it yourself project is the best way to copy CDs. A disc can be duplicated one of two ways at home. The first way will require that a CD-RW is an installed drive on the laptop or the desktop that is going to be used.

The first way is to copy the original disc to a laptop or a desk top and then place a blank disc in the CD-RW drive and copy the original disc's contents to the blank CD. The second way to do a cheap CD duplication is to use a free standing CD-RW. A free standing CD-RW typically has two trays, on tray is for the CD to be duplicated and the other tray is for the blank disc.

A free standing CD-RW copies the information from one disc onto another; this is a quick and efficient way for cheap CD Duplication. Either of these at home options is relatively simple and can be accomplished in less than thirty minutes.

There may be instances where large scale duplication may be necessary if that is the case that professional disc copying may be required. CD duplication on a large scale for say teaching material or maybe wedding pictures, in either instance the company that provides the affordable disc copying will do something similar that is done by the do it yourselfer at home. The equipment will be on a much larger scale but basically the same actions will occur. The original disc will be duplicated onto a bunch of blank CD's.

Affordable CD copying may not be so affordable. It depends on which professional copying company is used. Most companies charge per CD copied. Some companies will charge by the amount on the CD. Doing some research of available companies that specialize in cheap CD copying and reading user reviews is a great way to decide which company will be best for cheap CD copying.

Cheap CD duplication can be done at home or can be farmed out to a professional.

Review Jade [VHS]

Jade [VHS] Best Review

Five stars for William Friedkin's JADE, a masterful thriller that is gorgeous to look at but presented in an underwhelming edition by Lionsgate. The disc has a fair amount of grain all over it that descends into little more than digital noise in a couple of scenes, most notably the scene in the morgue and the climatic night/fight scene.
These scenes turn outrageously snowy/grainy and there is no excuse for this kind of a shoddy transfer. Making matters more sad, the rest of the disc looks pretty good and there are several scenes that are as beautiful as anything out on bluray (except AVATAR of course). It is a shame there is no consistancy in the picture quality of this disc. Also noteworthy is the excellent new 5.1 DTS-HD audio that really packs a lot of punch and puts you right in the middle of the action. Rear speakers blast during the spectacular car chase sequence. The disc retains the classic artwork that has appeared on every edition and movie poster for the film. The only extra on the disc is a poorly presented theatrical trailer.

It should be noted that this edition includes ONLY the THEATRICAL CUT of the film and not the much longer (and more explicit) directors cut. With all the much hyped superior storage capacity of bluray it seems ridiculous that studios are consistently failing to put multiple cuts of a film on a disc.

JADE has never been a popular film and has not even developed a cult following so I'm surprised that it has made its way onto bluray at all. I'm very glad it did but I wish it had been handled with a bit more care. This entire presentation is a bit slapdash. Still, I only paid for it at Walmart so I can't complain too much. The overall quality is a step up from the DVD edition and well worth the price at Walmart, although I would think twice about paying much more than for it.

Jade [VHS] Overview

Neither director William Friedkin nor star David Caruso could redeem this vulgar, nasty script by Joe Eszterhas. Caruso is a politically ambitious assistant D.A. investigating the gruesome murder of a San Francisco bigwig. Too many clues point in the direction of his former girlfriend (Linda Fiorentino), a shrink who has a secret sideline as call girl to the rich and kinky. For good measure, she's now married to Caruso's best friend, Chazz Palminteri. Friedkin has done much better work in other places; even he can't perform much magic here, though he tries, with a solid car chase (that suffers in comparison to those he staged in French Connection and To Live and Die in L.A.). --Marshall Fine

Good! - Kanji - JPN
This blu-lay quality is clearer and vivider than DVD's.
Like many fans,I'm dissatisfied at not containing unrated version.
But I welcome this blu-lay because I'm fanatical collector about Billy Friedkin's works. His intencive vision is always novel for every generation.

Why are Blu-rays chinching us on the longer versions? - Charles R. Bright - Springfield, IL USA
This was a movie I absolutely loved (though dated) when it originally came out. It had the edge of "Basic Instinct" and of course the hot girl. But this is the second Blu-ray I've bought in two days, where the Blu-ray doesn't contain the director's (extended footage) cut (as in the just released "The Natural") and now this. I do own the unrated VHS version (107 minutes long, and the studio gives us a crappy R-rated version (95 minutes long). This Blu-ray is also going back to the store with the other one. What is the deal! Blu-rays can store more data on them, so again, there is absolutely no reason (in the case where there is both an R-rated version and an Unrated version) that we should not be offered BOTH versions on the one disc. You have the room for it--put them on there studios. A couple more duds like these and I will be through buying Blu-rays. And a heads up for the studios--please don't have the audacity to offer only one of the versions of Last of the Mohicans when it comes out. The extended version has more action, but the original one has the footage with the one song cut out in the extended version. We need both.

Not a great Blu, but a decent improvement - Steve Kuehl - Ben Lomond, CA
I had no expectations as Paramount typically does some kind of DNR thingy with their 80s/90s titles, so I was just hoping to see a nice preservation of some Bay Area locales. By the time the credits rolled on this theatrical BD cut, I wasn't disappointed, it just had some serious issues.

Admittedly, I enjoyed watching this Basic Instinct clone (at last count there were 28 identical/similar characters, scenes, etc.), so between the sights, characters and score I felt sure Michael Douglas was going to cameo any second, but Loreena Mckennitt's The Mummers' Dance version of Mystic's Dream adds a nice feel throughout (although misplaced in half the scenes). The end result is laughable, but I figure one is reading this to hear about the BD.

The picture quality is vastly improved over the other products available; The colors have been enriched, the majority of artifact has been removed, the flesh tones have been glorified and depending on the camera being used - the views of the Bay Area show a decent time capsule preservation from 94/95. The cons: The resulting edge fuzz is prevalent, there is TONS of grain on most of the interiors, and the intermittent artifact/film fade pops up in some irritating spots. Overall - a decent upgrade but there is still plenty to pick apart.

The sound is a mixed bag. The DTS felt like it was forced as the outer channels were getting used heavily, even in the smallest of scenes, to the point where is was mixed incorrectly a few times. The vocals were drowned out in some of the louder sequences by outer channel garbage, and there were a couple of scenes where the post-production must have missed the timing (lips clearly not matching the words). The score sounds clear though, and any time Mckennitt sings you almost wish for a music-only track.

The only special feature is the original trailer which shows how bad the film looked (with a few brief clips of what must be in the Director's Cut). Region coded A. I cannot give this a higher rating as a BD because it had too many technical failings, no special features, and no director's cut.

Review Bill Cosby, Himself [VHS]

Bill Cosby, Himself [VHS] Best Review

I saw this movie for the first time some 20 years ago and have been a fan of Cosby since then. I went to see him last year in Vegas and it was amazing, so as soon as I found a Disc version of this movie, I bought it inmediately. I laughed as hard as it was the first time. Cosby touches an array of normal life situations that are as current today as they were all those years ago. Tha sketches about the dentist, the weekend and most of all the parents/kids situation are for the ages.

My favorite part is about the grandparents so sweet and giving to the grand children as they never were with us: "my father come to my house giving money to my children and I thing that is not my father, that's just and old man trying to get into heaven!!! Thats the same man who, when I asked for 50 cents, told me the story of his life, and he never told a happy story..." Who cannot relate to that?

Contrary to most comedians of today, Cosby doesnt say a bad word or a sex situation and still have you, crying out of laughter. You wont be disapointed!!

Bill Cosby, Himself [VHS] Overview

One of America's most popular comedians, Bill Cosby treats his fans to a funny, satirical and heart-warming concert at Toronto's Hamilton Place Performing Arts Center. His material ranges from marriage and the unending trials of parenthood, to the side-splitting antics of the very young, and a hilarious encounter with a dentist's drill and needle. Insightful and witty, this highly entertaining film is a rare cinematic treat, filled with all the spontaneity and electricity that only a live performance can provide.

Bill Cosby, Himself [VHS] Specifications

After I Spy and before The Cosby Show, Bill Cosby left his own inimitable mark on the arena of stand-up comedy in this live concert showcasing his down-to-earth observations on the rigors and joys of family life. Cosby, using only a microphone and a chair, discusses his take on raising kids and the illogical nature of children and the futility of trying to argue with a child that in the end may be smarter than you. Notable highlights include Cosby's ruminations on the meaning of the all-purpose phrase "I don't know" to kids, and Cosby describing the effect raising children has on his wife Camille's mental state and the pitch of her voice. Containing the basis for the humor of his long-running situation comedy, Bill Cosby: Himself is a polished, occasionally insightful, and frequently hilarious night of comedy from one of the longtime masters of the form. --Robert Lane

Taken Movie Review - Simple Title, Simple Film

For those that are familiar with the process of how a movie gets the studio "greenlight" you are probably aware of what a "treatment" is. For those that don't know, it's a brief summary of the film being proposed. Generally, it's a little longer and more detailed than an outline but not as detailed and long as a script. They can be anywhere from a brief few paragraphs to several pages long. In the case of Taken, the treatment could easily have been written on the back of a matchbook. That's not always a bad thing, sometimes simpler is better. In Taken's case, I'm just not really sure.

The entire film is basically summarized in the trailer where Liam Neeson's character is having a phone conversation with the kidnappers of his daughter, played by Lost's Maggie Grace. To paraphrase, he tells them that he has no ransom money, but he a specific "set of skills" that make him a nightmare for people like them and that he will hunt them down and kill them. That's it. That's the movie. That's the exposition and that is exactly what happens in the film.

There are no twists and turns, no intricate espionage subplots, and no substantial character development beyond that. There's no attempt made by the film to make you believe or think that anything else is going on beyond the formula, which is:

1. Father's daughter is kidnapped
2. Father threatens the kidnappers
3. Father finds a kidnapper/bad guy
4. Father kills kidnapper/bad guy
5. Return to step 3 and repeat until all kidnappers are dead.

Yes, granted, sometimes he kills more than one person, but that's about it. There's very little "fun" in the journey either. First, all of the action sequences are the quick cut, nuts camera style of editing. When done well, like in the Bourne films or in Quantum of Solace, it's very effective. In Taken, it's not done very well. The sequences are somewhat annoying, hard to follow, and leaves what really is happening just out of reach of the normal human ability to process information.

The camera work is so crazy that it had my wife leaving the theater to the restrooms in a bout of motion sickness, a reaction she hasn't had to a film since the beach invasion sequence in Saving Private Ryan with the high shutter speed action. Granted, she is a wuss and has trouble with too much on screen motion.

The plot itself is treated with very little love. The only thing that could even half-way considered even a "sub-plot" was set up in the first 10 minutes and pretty much brought home in the last 5 with no mention or relevance in between.

What this all adds up to is simply an incredibly average action yarn. There's very little compelling about it beyond a solid performance of the type we're used to seeing from Liam Neeson.

Can't say I could really recommend Taken for any reason beyond the interesting choice of casting Liam Neeson as a bad-ass action hero, but even then that's hardly enough to hold together such a paper-thin film.

In the Army Now [VHS] Overview

Pauly Shore is definitely not one of the few good men army recruitment has in mind for molding into a soldier. But that doesn't stop pacifist Pauly from signing up for a hitch in the reserves in order to cash in on all the great perks, including free room and board and a steady salary for doing minimal work. Now this man's army is putting Pauly to the test. And Pauly the military misfit is serving his country as only he can, and single-handedly putting the army on red alert. Clipped of his curls and scuttling from a scud base in the African desert, he's battling with everything from rules and regulations to power-hungry authority figures and would-be world dictators. Surrendering to the comic crisis of being a soldier who marches to the beat of a different drummer, G.I. Shore is on a mission that promises to score a direct hit.

Wow! This isn't Very Good Now Is It? - Quentin Tarantino Fan - nowhere
After butchering science fiction AND comedy in the beyond horrible Bio-Dome (tied for the worst movie ever made besides Plump Fiction), here comes everybody's favorite retard Pauly Shore! A disgrace to the war comedy, Pauly Shore may not be as annoying as he was in Bio-Dome (that's not saying much), but anybody in the military should be rightfully insulted and shamed for this dull, unfunny comedy from one of the world's worst comedians, right up there with Carlos Mencia, Carrot Top, and the dolts who send videos into America's Funniest Home Videos (the latter is a cesspool of people who out to be sent to the slaughterhouse, along with the people who find this **** funny).

You want a war film with humor. Try Saving Private Ryan. Thanks to Matt Damon, his whole story about his brothers spying on the ugly girl seem so personally funny and memorable for him that you just can't help but laugh with him. Seriously.

For those who want a great war comedy, anything but this unfunny retard-on-celluoid is better. If you want a loony war comedy, try Tropic Thunder or the underrated 1941. Of course, when it comes to classic war comedies, you can't go wrong with Duck Soup, Chaplin's The Great Dictator, Dr. Strangelove, or Three Kings. This is a disgrace to soldiers, comedy, and war movies.

Is Pauley Shore Dead? Hopefully Not - Craig Connell - Lockport, NY USA
Whatever happened to Pauley Shore? I guess he's still around but you didn't hear much from him after this movie, which was a decent success. It was a surprisingly-good lightweight comedy with a bunch of likable goofs and weirdos from Glendale, California, and their adventures after they join the Army Reserves.

The language was pretty tame in here but there were a lot of sexual innuendos, too many for a PG rating but not surprising in a modern-day comedy. That comedy overall is good with some laugh-out-loud scenes.

Also, as with many films, the ending gets carried away. It was really dumb, but for most of this movie it was entertaining enough to certainly recommend if you need a laugh.

Funny - H. Masengale - Virginia
This movie is too funny! If you are a Pauly Shore fan this is a must own.

HP and Dell Planning 3D Gaming Laptops - Is This a Smart Move?

Recently, gaming circles and forums have been abuzz with news that both HP and Dell are working on 3D gaming laptops. They are said to be working with Wistron, which is a major ODM manufacturer with over 30,000 workers world-wide, on producing new 3D gaming rigs. According to Nexgadget rumors are swirling about a possible HP gaming laptop using 18.4-inch 3D panels made by Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) and a Wistron created 3D laptop solution based on NVIDIA's GeForce 3D Vision technology.

Actually, the movement towards 3D is probably the next logical way to go with computer gaming but is it a good idea? Will these new 3D gaming laptops be snapped up by hard-core gamers?

Probably so and here's why.

Computer gaming is all about fun and entertainment, new 3D technologies will only add to the fun factor. Gamers are all looking for the next big thing when it comes to gaming, can you say Milo? Sorry wrong storyline but not really, gaming is becoming more and more interactive, we want real emotions, we want real interactions and we want real connections with the characters in our games. But most of all we want real images, the more realistic and life-like, the better our gaming experience will be. We want to be totally immersed in the role playing, if 3D can add, rather than subtract from this immersion, it will be a big winner.

Many people are turned off by 3D movies, at least the ones produced in the fifties, sixties and seventies - to me they just come across as way too cheesy, more aimed at our retinal cones than our minds or hearts for that matter. Ralphie you'll poke your eye out.

Besides, most 3D movies of the past and not so distant past are just plain silly. They can not be taken seriously, no matter how you view them. However, many would agree, 3D movies are a lot of fun and that's what gaming is all about. 3D does have it's place, I can remember being wowed by the 3D Terminator show at the Epcot Center in Orlando Florida which had a mixture of live action and 3D images. No King Lear, but it was entertaining and it was fun.

Gamers want fun and escapement. I keep thinking, would 3D enhance a game like Crysis which I have just finished playing - hell yes. Using 3D would probably make floating around in that mountain/alien much more enjoyable and it would probably make fighting that creature on the battleship at the end much more entertaining, even if all they wanted to do was poke my eyes out.

Hopefully, game designers will go for a little more sophistication in their application of these newer 3D technologies and combine it with the increasingly popular HD technologies to produce a totally realistic immersion for gamers. Pure escape into a world that looks and feels real is the ultimate goal. No doubt, this goal will give many concerned parents added worry about the affect these already too realistic violent games are having on young people. Especially worrisome is the whole argument that popular "first person shooter games" desensitizes impressionable teens and young children into acting out violent behavior in the real world.

This controversial issue aside, if 3D can truly enhance our gaming pleasure in these new gaming laptops, more power to them. Mainly because, in more ways than one, the game is the medium, message and king. Make the game more enjoyable and gamers will be lining up around the block to purchase your new contraption.

So bring it on, HP and Dell, let's see what you got?

Enhanced Technology and Features of Blu-Ray Disk Technology

Blu-ray disk format utilizes two video compression codecs for recording full length HD movie. One recording format is VC-1. This recording codec was co-developed by Microsoft. VC-1 is the variation of the Microsoft's Windows media codec. Higher compression is offered by VC-1 codec and the signal loss during the process of encoding/decoding has been minimized. The other recording codec used by Bluray disk format is advanced video coding (AVC). It is an enhanced form of MPEG-4. The DVD disk format uses the MPEG-2 compression codec. MPEG-4 codec used by Blu-ray disc technology is more efficient than its predecessor MPEG-2. Bluray disk technology offers superior and exceptional quality of audio/video at lower bit-rates that the DVD disc format. The HD quality offered by Blu-ray media disks exceeds the users' expectations. Both these recording codecs offer more flexibility to the studios for recording their Bluray media disks. When the pre-existing DVD released bonus features are ported to the Blu-ray disk format, then they are recorded in the MPEG-2 codec. The Bluray disk players are very useful as they can also play the DVD media disks thus providing additional benefit to the users.

Bluray disk players also perform the up-gradation of the 480p DVD standard to the quasi high definition levels and then up to resolution of 1080p. That is how a Blu-ray player enhances the resolution and quality of DVD. Blu-ray disk format supports the latest HD audio codecs. The combination of advanced A/V receivers, decoding power and massive storage capacity of Bluray technology ensure such high quality. The other two competing codecs Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio have the capability to reproduce 7.1 discrete audio channels with increased dynamic range and accuracy ever before achieved in home. In order to shrink the storage requirements and bandwidth, these codes use compression. As a result of this compression, the soundtracks produced are the original PDM master tapes' bit perfect copies.

Interactivity has been improved in the Blu-ray disk technology. BD-Live is also supported by the BD-ROM Profile 2.0. Its features can be updated through the internet. The Profile 1.1 players require WiFi connection or Ethernet port for fast speed internet connectivity. That is why most of the profile 1.1 Bluray disk players will not support the profile 2.0. The players need to temporarily store at least 1-GB of varying data amount. Use of SD memory card of USB flash drive can do the trick. The latest Bluray disk players fully support BD-ROM 2.0 Profile. These Blu-ray players also have network ports that help the users in enabling new features and fixing bugs. Java software is an essential component of the Blu-ray specification that assists in interactivity and elaborates the popup disk menus. On the other hand in DVD format, the animated menus are pre-rendered. The top games of new generation also benefit from the highly reliable BD-Java technology. The outer layer of the high capacity Blu-ray media disk is more durable and harder that protects the surface from scratches and dust particles thus resulting in a more efficient and reliable media disk technology.

Bluray DVD disk is also known as BD. Blu-ray disk format was developed in order to enable rewriting, recording, and playback of high-definition video HDV. Bluray recordable DVD disc can hold large amounts of data.

Best Tips to Compare LCD TVs - Your Lifetime Contentment Lies With Your Choice

What makes Television innovations more astonishing is the advancement concerning its images by soars and bounds. Whether it is a Panasonic LCD TV, Phillips LCD TV, LG LCD TV, Sharp LCD TV, Hitachi LCD TV or Samsung LCD TV, all sustain noteworthy changes. As years pass by, TVs get slimmer and costs have dropped. Nonetheless, surely you are aware that no matter what Television you prefer to have is obliged to endow an astounding image and thin form feature.

Want to compare LCD TVs? You might care to consider the thought of having a flat screen Television clinging on your own wall. The remarkable fact that large screen TVs can now be placed lynching on the wall, whereby you can regularly enjoy watching your desired ball games or comedy series through a far-fetched Hi-Def TV image, is indeed a state-of-the-art innovation of technology.

LCD TVs found all over the marketplace cannot be said to be entirely similar. Indubitably, there are some variations of them. Agree? Of course, some TVs are more superior than others in several aspects. When you intend to differentiate one product from the other, you must however know the manner of depicting these dissimilarities. During the latest years, it has been observed that costs of LCD TVs significantly diminished. Nonetheless, you still prefer to get your money's worth in purchasing a Television plus it must be a perfect satisfaction of your preferences.

Primarily, you must consider the physical dimensions of your Television. The strange thing is that persons, perhaps some, usually construct or purchase a cabinet and thereafter search for a TV that corresponds to the reserved space. A lot of times occur when one turns out to be dissatisfied with the TV's size just due to a part of cabinet proportions which is smaller for an inch or more.

If you have the option to take your time in selecting your desired TV set, you must utilize the same. This is for the rationale of avoiding the designing or purchasing of a cabinet for an anticipated TV set which will later cease when the instance of purchasing the TV has come.

Second matter to regard is to take a glimpse of some of the newly released LCD TVs having thin bezels. For instance, can a 42 inches TV be permitted to fit in an area specially reserved for a 37 inches TV set? You might desire to be familiar with the fact that there are times when these slimmer bezel LCD Televisions are more profound than their regular beveled cousins. If you place the set lynching on a wall, the additional 2 inches to 3 inches might create a substantial dissimilarity which is actually not some matter to be taken notice of if you just place your new Television set within a cabinet.

When the space reserved for your Television set accurately fits the same, the next thing to properly do is to test the quality of the image. You purchased a latest Television to obviously watch it and thus, there are various methods on how you can evaluate the image quality in order to make up your mind as to which among the sets gives a more superior image.

You might however encounter a dilemma when you are merely gazing at a set on a display area for the reason that all TVs are appropriately attuned for the finest image. Most often than not, these TVs are transported and adjusted in a "torch mode". Torch mode is an industrial term which is actually a slang when TVs and even monitors of computers are attuned extraordinarily vivid, or exceedingly blue, at the factory itself, habitually done to cover up substandard quality. As when 10 Televisions are displayed, the most natural consequence is that customers get attracted towards the most vivid Television they see while in fact, the most vivid one is, in most cases, not the one which has the finest image particularly when the same has been adjusted to appear artificially vivid.

A lot of LCD TVs, particularly the 1080p sets, have ample vividness for whichever viewing state except when the set is placed in straight sunlight where vividness or contrast can no longer be adjusted. The point driven at is that the mere act of gazing at a TV displayed in the sales area will not frequently afford you a truthful demonstration of the set's offered image quality.

In the earlier times when LCD TVs first existed, the most prevalent concerns encountered by consumers are concerns on motion artifact. However, one aspect which paved the way towards getting rid of the problem is the 120Hz refresh rate. Naturally, it must be considered in searching for an LCD TV. At present, such aspect is rampant on majority of producer's more superior LCD sets and is actually identified by various trade names.

Toshiba, makes use of the name "ClearFrame"". On the other hand, any trade name was not designated by Sharp for its very own sets having a 120Hz feature. These sets are merely called as "120 Hz frame rate conversion". For Mitsubishi, they prefer identifying their sets as "Smooth 120Hz". In any case, these trade names refer to one and the same thing. LCD TVs having this kind of feature surely creates better quality images that work finest on quick moving images such as scrolling text and sports. Match it up with TVs without such feature.

Another significant thing to consider in gazing at one of the TVs newly released is the existence of ample inputs necessary for linking your satellite receiver or cable box, BluRay player, or computer. Most often than not, everything shall be connected all at once up to the surround sound receiver and thereafter, only a single cable towards the Television will be ran.

A lot of LCD TVs newly released have with them digital tuners assembled in it, thus, allowing the link of an Hi-Def TV antenna which in turn permits one to obtain signals spreading over the air, unlike a usual Plasma TV. Several of these latest TVs have what they term as QUAM tuner which permits you to obtain digital cable programming which are not encrypted. In most cases, local channels are being aired in complete Hi-Def TV resolution by the cable company "in the clear". "In the clear" denotes that in no way they are encrypted, thus allowing you to view them, even absent any cable box, but through the QUAM tuner assembled into your TV.

Having ample inputs turns out to be essentially significant if you don't use a surround receiver. In order to derive the finest probable image from video sources of HD digital, you have to ensure that a minimum of three (3) HDMI inputs are present. Another excellent thought would be to obtain a pair of component video inputs suitable for older sources like DVD players.

The preceding facts are something worth taking consideration of when you are searching for new LCD TVs comparison regardless of whether it is a cheap LCD TV. Your long years of contentment with your new TV set lies with no matter what TV you prefer to purchase.

Review Julia [VHS]

Julia [VHS] Best Review

Having been much taken with "Julia" upon its release in 1977, I was curious if I would be so enthralled by it over thirty years later. It holds up very well indeed. Starring Jane Fonda as the writer Lillian Hellman and directed by Fred Zinnemann ("A Man for All Seasons") it is based on a story taken supposedly from Hellman's memoir PENTIMENTO although Reynolds Price in his latest memoir ARDEN SPIRITS accuses Hellman of "purloining" incidents from the life of Muriel Gardiner Buttinger. At any rate the story of what happens to Julia (Vanessa Redgrave) and her fight against fascism in the 1930's makes for high drama of the first order. Both Redgrave and Jason Robards, who plays Dash Hammett, Hellman's lover, both received Oscars for their performances. Maximilian Schell and Hal Holbrook have minor roles, and Meryl Streep has a few lines as well. This seems to me to be Jane Fonda at her best-- she looks terribly young and beautiful-- before she started playing herself as so often happens to actors as they get older. Certainly she is in good company here: think Katharine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson as two examples. Oh, and Redgrave, never one to shun controversy, is just as famous-- or infamous, depending on your point of view-- for her "Zionist" remarks in her Oscar acceptance speech as she is for this very fine performance.

The film opens and closes with the same peaceful scene with voice over from Hellman's memoir. A really fine movie indeed.

Julia [VHS] Overview

Part of the late-'70s wave of films about strong women (as if none had existed before that), Julia starred Jane Fonda as writer Lillian Hellman in a story based on some of Hellman's own writings. The stronger woman here is the title character (Vanessa Redgrave), a socially active young woman who teaches Hellman the importance of sticking to her beliefs--even in the face of Nazi terror. The subplot focuses on Hellman's growth as a writer, under the supportive wing of lover Dashiell Hammett (Jason Robards). Lushly photographed by Fred Zinnemann, it's one of the few films that projects a sense of how a writer writes; it also was unafraid to explore the dark consequences of conscience, when Resistance-fighter Julia is captured by the Germans. Robards and Redgrave both won Oscars (leading to Redgrave's Zionist hoodlums acceptance speech). Watch for Meryl Streep in a tiny role in her film debut. --Marshall Fine

Good movie, - Jean Iguatemy - Denver, USA
Great acting, refreshing to watch an "old" movie with more content and less just "holywood action". Also the DVD in itself (physical media} is in great shape, plays flawlessly. I'm very pleased.

Lives of the saints - Jay Dickson - Portland, OR
Fred Zimmerman's 1977 film based on one of the sections of Lillian Hellman's memoir PENTIMENTO has not aged so well, despite some lovely compositions and the undeniable star power of Jane Fonda as Lillian Hellman, Jason Robards as her lover Dashiell Hammett, and Vanessa Redgrave as the titular heroine, a wealthy young woman who was Lillian's best friend in childhood and has grown up to fight injustice in general and the Nazis in particular. The film was made with Hellman's assistance (that's the real Hellman in the rowboat fishing in the framing shots), and you can see why almost immediately. Both Lillian and Julia are basically enshrined in the film as ideal heroines, brave, brilliant, beautiful, and resolutely heterosexual. (Fonda decks John Glover for implying she and Julia are lesbians in one scene that seems specifically included to forestall the audience getting any funny ideas.) There's not much plot except for a long Ambleresque sequence where Hellman is sent into Germany to smuggle in money to bribe officials to save victims of the Nazis; it's much more interesting than the rest of the film, which mostly alternates scenes of the young Julia (the lovely Lisa Pelikan) being saintly alternating with Fonda sulking at the typewriter, trying to please Robards's hardbitten Hammett. There's been quite a bit of controversy whether Julia ever existed, whether she's a composite of women Hellman knew, or whether she was the famous psychiatrist Muriel Gardiner who shared a lawyer with Hellman (but whom Hellman herself never actually knew).

One of the BEST FILMS of the latter 20th Century. - Delia Cochrane - NYC-MN USA
I have seen this over 20 times, and find the story, pacing and settings captivating. Let us review the film on its merits as a docu-drama and the wonderful and deep characterizations portrayed by Vanessa Redgrave and Jane Fonda. A woman's memoir of a turbulent time in her life and the world's. A story of devotion and sacrifice.
I had seen this in the cinema with my best friend when we were very young, and it has stayed with us over the years. I purchased two DVDS: one to replace my old-"taped from TV" and the second as a gift to my dear friend.
I recommed this film highly for anyone looking further into the life of one of our pioneer female writers and playwrights, and for a vision into what sacrifice can mean.

For more interest in Socio-polictical topics, I also recommend Citizen Cohen...The story of Judge Roy Cohen, the infamous second to MaCarthy...and the subsequent Red-hunts of the late 40s and early 50s. Starring James Woods (HBO).

Not really sure... - Lee C. Ford -
I didn't watch the movie, actually I ordered it for my father ('puter illiterate).
Frankly, it would be a subzero day in hades before I would poison my eyes or mind by watching anything that starred hanoi jane, but that's just me...
He said he'd give it a 3...

Common Types of Wireless Networks

We will be taking a closer look a various wireless technologies that include data transmitting and are linked to the family of radio standardized protocols 802.11(which is known as 802.11a, b or c), known in many circles as Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) and 802.16, known as WiMax.

802.11b is an IEEE protocol since the 16 of September 1999 and it is probably the most common wireless network protocol used in most home use devices up to date. It used DSSS modulations and it operated on the frequency range of industry, science and medicine. If you use these protocols you don't need any licenses as long as you are using standardized devices. It has his limits as follows: the output power is up to 1 watt and the modulations are only those that can fit into the 2.412 and 2.484 GHz range. The maximum network speed while using devices with this protocol is 11 Mbps, but the average speed that has been calculated in home using is of 5Mbps.

802.11g has been used since June 2003. Despite his late start, this protocol is in fact the standard protocol of wireless networks because it has been implemented in all laptops that have wireless cards incorporated and on most other portable devices. It used the same frequencies as 802.11b, but it uses the modulation type OFDM, which makes it better and faster. Its maximum network speed is of 54Mbps, with practical references of 25 Mbps. The transfer speed is flexible and can decrease sometimes to speeds that are even lower than 11Mbps, and the devices switches to DSSS modulation, to realize data exchange with the more popular 802.11b protocol.

802.11a is a known and certified protocol since September 1999. It used OFDM modulations and has a maximum speed of 54MBps. Because it operates on higher frequencies that the two protocols mentioned above, it is incompatible with them, so no connections can be made between them. In some countries, using these frequencies is not allowed without a license, so this is what makes the protocol less popular, even if the equipments are in fact cheaper.

802.16 has been a valid wireless protocol since 2004 and it can use various frequencies, some licensed and other unlicensed. The WiMax flexibility can offer attractive prices for a various range of services as VoiP telephony, video surveillance, distance monitoring, e-learning, ad-hoc networks for companies. This is often used by companies and juridical persons.

For persons with bad intentions, who are very well trained in the field, the security of all wireless protocols is questionable. The basic security methods that have been implemented in WI-Fi protocols assure a pretty low level of security, which pretty much stopped them from taking over for a while.

Review Lost Horizon [VHS]

Lost Horizon [VHS] Best Review

Ronald Colman, A Very Private PersonRonald Colman: Gentleman of the Cinema (McFarland Classics)The Prisoner of Zenda (1937 and 1952 Versions)Random HarvestA Tale of Two Cities (1935)The optimistic confidence that Capra expresses in his movies, such as "Mr Smith Goes to Washington" and "It's a Wonderful Life" are in display in this 1930's extravaganza re-telling of James Hilton's best-selling novel. Hilton and MGM weren't seeking to portray a realistic travelogue of the peoples of Tibet and lamasery life but rather to tell a wistful story of utopia. Yes, the movie has creaks and cracks to our modern eyes - it is strange to see Chinese portrayed by Westerners - but it is very much a product of its Depression era. Folks who lived in that period, who scraped and struggled to find work and keep their homes and their families intact, who had loved ones that fought and died in World War I, and who were aware of the growing militarism in Germany and Italy and what it might mean for the future - those folks would have walked out of the movie theatre wishing they too could find their Shangri-La. Only the most pedantic and socialist of those viewers would have focused on the inconsistency between the expressed utopian wish and the fact that the palatial lamasery and its inhabitants were supported by the Tibetan inhabitants of the Valley of the Blue Moon. Hey, people -this is a "feel good" escapist movie, not a political training film!

Those reviewers who state that Ronald Colman's (other reviewers please note this is the correct spelling of the actor's name!) performance of Foreign Consul Robert Conway was not his best should be advised that: 1) James Hilton wrote the character of Conway with Colman in mind and that 2) Colman's own daughter, Juliet Benita Colman, thought her father was playing himself. (Perhaps, therefore, those reviewers who found Mr Colman's performance not his best merely prefer the characters of Sydney Carton, Tony John, and/or Charles Rainier to the real English gentleman actor).

The opening sequence (of which I will not reveal the facts, so as not to place a spoiler in this review) was very realistic. The Chinese suffered horribly under the invasion of the Japanese in the mid-30s, a fact willingly ignored by many Westerners. Not so Robert Conway - listen to what he says to his brother after his statement regarding the saving of the Westerners in Bakul.

Parents who are concerned about the "nude" swimming scene of Jane Wyatt should know that the stand-in for the actress was filmed from the back, at a great distance, and in soft focus. The nude appearance is only for a second or two (the Hays Office would not have permitted more!).

In summary, I think this is a movie well-worth watching for its goals and its entertainment value. All this being said, I still want to strangle George Conway every time he appears on the screen. His character is so one-dimensional as to be a distraction every time he is before the camera.

Lost Horizon [VHS] Overview

James Hilton's novel Lost Horizon proposes a perfect hidden community within the uncharted Himalayas, a land where peace reigns and the inhabitants live for hundreds of years. So indelible is this mythical land that its name has entered the culture: Shangri-La. Director Frank Capra, riding high during his mid-'30s hot streak, spared no expense in creating Hilton's paradise onscreen, taxing the coffers of Columbia Pictures and the patience of mogul Harry Cohn. The results, however, are magical: shimmering, seductive, and maybe a bit foolish, truly the creation of an idealist (understandably, the spectacular art direction won an Oscar). And Capra's hero is an idealist, too. Ronald Colman, at his most marvelously elocutionary, plays a wise diplomat whose plane crashes in the snows of Tibet. He and the other survivors are guided to Shangri-La, where they wrestle with the invitation to stay. The young Jane Wyatt plays Colman's love interest, but leaving a more lasting impression are H.B. Warner, as the benevolent Chang, and Sam Jaffe, in great old-age makeup, as the wizened High Lama. This version has been restored as closely as possible to Capra's original cut; the film had circulated for many years in a trimmed form. Lost Horizon was remade, notoriously and hilariously, as a big-budget musical in 1973; it was a complete flop. --Robert Horton

fantastic - D. Newman -
One of my favorite movies. Had a VHS copy but no VHS machine, anymore. Needed the dvd version

Wonderful film with a tangled history - Stellar Jay -
I only wish that one of the deleted scenes included in the "extras" on this DVD had made it into the final print. It is a scene between the two female characters who unfortunately don't have an exchange in the released film. It would have made a great film better.

Beautiful Vision of Paradise - Jeremy Richmond - Lakewood, CA USA
Lost Horizon is the most beautiful movie I have seen. It starts off with the characters boarding a plane to flee an uprising in China. Their pilot lands somewhere without their permission to provide supplies to some militants. They take off again and I can't remember what happens next but somehow their plane crashes in the Himalayas. At the crash site they are greeted by Tibetans and are led to a place high up in the mountains called Shangrila. Shangrila is a dreamlike paradise where people age extremely slowly and there is no disease or sickness. In Shangrila there is also no worries about being unemployed, people don't fret about their loved one cheating on them and there is no competition. It is so to say, the ideal society.

Lost Horizon is the most beautiful film I know of to come out of Hollywood. If they remade it these days they would probably do a bad job. They actually did remake the film in the 70s as a musical and it was a disaster.

A theme found in the film that is especially important is the fact that the brother of the main character wants to leave Shangrila with his female companion who also wants to leave. This is representative of how some people are. Hasn't there been tons of marriages made from heaven that ended because one person in the marriage was incapable of experiencing love and happiness. Some people crave the real world with its conflict and insecurity. Not me.

I think if humanity got its act together it could create a true Shangrila, and Lost Horizon would not be just a vision, but a reality.

Unfortunately we do not have the Lost Horizon film in its entirety. Parts of it were lost with only the audio track remaining. During these parts the film is played with the video replaced with still photographs of the characters and the audio track playing. Most of the film remains though and despite this it still holds up as a cinematic classic. In the special features is also included an audio track with stills from a scene that was put in the original version of the film where the main character relates a story of his stay in Shangrila to people on a cruise ship and plays a never before heard Chopin piano composition he had learned about there.

Choose HDMI Over Component Video For Your HDTV and Blu-Ray Player

High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is state-of-the-art connection technology, allowing uncompressed sound and video signals to transfer from your source equipment directly to your high definition television (HDTV). Instead of a bunch of tangled-up connections like you have with DVI or with component video (those red/green/blue jacks), HDMI completes your audio and your video transfers using just one small jack.

So how does this all affect you, as the buyer of all of this complicated technology? What this means is that you will only need to purchase one cable, not several as you did in the past, to connect your HDMI source equipment (like a Blu-ray disk player, Xbox 360, Wii, HD cable or satellite box, new A/V surround receiver, etc.) to your HD television.

It could not be any easier. Your video resolution will be an astounding 1080p, and you will also experience uncompressed discrete surround audio that is unbeatable. But some people will state, "The component video cable device I have now appears to work alright with my new HDTV." And, the fact is that, most of the time, this is the truth. However you won't be able to use your component video cable for joining together a Blu-ray player with a new HDTV and get all that the new HD medium will give you. On a television that is larger than fifty inches, switching over to Blu-ray and going up to 1080p is just like getting your windows washed. Yes, you can see through them adequately now, but when they are really clean you can see a huge difference.

Another reason to use HDMI connections is their compatibility with the new A/V digital surround receivers. It is possible to get Dolby TrueHD as well as DTS-HD Master Audio tracks through HDMI. Your Toslink optical and coaxial digital cables could never accomplish this, and you will be amazed by how much better it is than your regular DVD surround soundtrack. Everything pans throughout your 5.1 or 7.1 theater, immersing you in the audio-visual experience in a fully controlled manner. You can see how different it is from the moment that you begin.

Now you can understand how HDMI can make your connections so much easier, letting you get rid of the tangled web of wires behind your entertainment center and giving you a video and audio quality that is absolutely fantastic when you use your new 1080p television, projector, or Blu-ray disc player.

When Vic Metten needs HDMI cable, he goes to Best Deal Cables, because they carry DVI cables, 1080p HDMI cables, and component video cables all at reasonable prices. Also, their HDMI cables have unique clips that keep them secure while they are attached to equipment. So, for superior picture clarity and quality, choose the best HDMI cables.

Before You Buy, Check a Blu-ray Quality Comparison

Do you know why it's important to consider a Blu-ray quality comparison before you head out and shop for your Blu-ray player? It's easy to think that all Blu-ray players are alike but in reality this just isn't true. While the technology may be the same and they all work in the same way, there are some differences between them that you might want to consider. And some machines come with other options and features that might make them a better choice for you.

For instance, the PlayStation 3 is a Blu-ray player as well as having a built-in Wii. You can also browse the internet through this device. That means that if you want to play Wii games or PlayStation games or watch a movie in high def, this is the machine for you! With all these features standard it can become your true home theater component, whatever you're planning on using it for. As a matter of fact, some have said their only complaint is that they can't get the family away from it.

Of course there are other players on the market and you need to make your own decision about what works best for you. If you just watch the occasional movie but want it in high def, then a basic model may be for you. However you want to be sure that you're still getting your money's worth! The last thing you want to do is buy some knockoff or poor quality machine and wind up having to replace it after a few months. So do your research and keep in mind your own particular needs, and your Blu-ray quality comparison will save you money in the long run.

Nick Chow is a strong believer in getting the most bang for your buck when it comes to Blu-ray players. Find out is Blu-ray better than DVD by visiting his website now.is
