How to Choose the Best Blu-Ray Player

The battle of HD media is finally over. Blu-Ray got a few breaks here or there, but at the end of the day it was able to defeat HD-DVD for the high definition market dominance. If you have never owned a blu-ray disc, you don't know what you are missing. The quality is much higher that most people expect before trying their first blu-disk. And if you have a decent HDTV, you are going to find it difficult going back to standard-definition media after trying bluray movies.

Choosing a blu-player is not as easy as it used to be a few months ago. There are too many options to choose from, and since we are talking about devices that are very similar in picture quality, you should do your due diligence to find the player that is right for you.

If you are looking for a good blu-ray player, you should take the following factors into account:

  • Resolution: most of these players have a resolution of 1080p. Don't settle for anything less.

  • Bonus View: also called a form of PIP and is a must have if you want get the whole high-def experience on your TV.

  • Network: being able to connect to the Internet and get content from YouTube and Netflix is a big plus.

  • BD Live support: BD Live brings interactivity to the content you buy. Make sure your system supports it.

  • Internal storage: if you are getting an Internet ready device, make sure you have a place to store the content.

Some folks prefer their device to support multiple disks and read HD-DVDs as well. There are many fancy models on the market, but as long as you can afford expensive models, the sky's the limit on the features you can get with these gadgets. One things is for certain though. Once you go blu, you are never going to want to go back again.

We have gathered and ranked best blu-ray players on BluCrunch.com. Whether you are looking for a YouTube blu-player or just want to check the latest blu-ray player ratings, you can get it all on Blu Crunch

Looking For a DVD VHS Combo Player

Most recording devices are eventually replaced with a new, more innovative model and a VHS recorder is no different. Before long, the cassettes will become obsolete, they will deteriorate and the recorders will no longer be manufactured. But with a DVD VHS combo player you will not have to worry about that happening to your precious memories.

The Toshiba DVR670 consistently gets high reviews from experts and users alike. It is very easy to convert VHS tapes to DVD digital recordings with this model. You simple press a button and the player will take care of the rest. You can also do the reverse if you have occasional use for such a process. No DVD VHS combo player (to my knowledge) is capable of copying commercially created content that is protected by copyright encoding and this player is no different. But you can copy content from cable, satellite or broadcast television with a press of one button.

The Sony RDR-VX560 player has excellent playback quality and one touch dubbing of VHS to DVD and that means that there is no reason to be intimated when attempting to transfer your old memories to a DVD - a simple press of a button will do it for you. This device does not have the capability of recording programming from television unless you have a converter box that can be connected to the line input. That being said, you will get great playback quality from the player using it this way as well as for transferring VHS tapes.

Prices for a DVD VHS combo player range from approximately two hundred dollars to approximately three hundred dollars. There are many other models available from manufactures like Panasonic, JVC, Samsung, Philips and Sylvania to name a few. The best thing to do is an online comparison to make certain you are getting all the features that are most important to you.

Still trying to figure out what the combo player is then check out this great VCR Combo Player site or this cool place to find more info about VHS Combo Player products and options.

The Firm - Total Body: Low Impact Aerobics [VHS] Overview

This video misrepresents itself. Although the title is Low Impact Aerobics, it is not low impact. The cardio intervals include jogging, jumping jacks, and other moves with hops. This is a 65-minute reissue of a 1988 video that features Janet Jones-Gretzky, who is so slim that you can count her ribs through her white leotard, leading a class of fit, gorgeous exercisers (female and male). This aerobic interval workout combines fast cardio (no patterns) with more controlled cardio plus weights, though still at a fast pace. We've learned a lot about exercise since 1988, and these two-second reps with weights are not as effective as slower reps. They are also more likely to lead to injury. Although the video is targeted to all levels, unless you're an experienced exerciser, it's too easy to lose correct form when you're doing such fast reps and aerobic moves at the same time. You might find the weight intervals repetitious (tons of lunges and shoulder presses). A floor-work segment uses ankle weights, followed by a stretch. Unless you miss the old Firm workouts, choose one that is more up to date (and therefore safer and more effective). --Joan Price

Video Game Testing Salaries - How Much Money Can You Make As A Game Tester?

You may have seen different advertisements on the Internet saying you can make $300 or more an hour as a beta tester for video games. Is this true? Not usually. Typically, when you see an advertisement like this, it is giving you a "fantasy scenario," as most game testers don't make anywhere near that. In this article, I will give you a realistic approach on how much money you can get paid to play video games.

First of all, you can earn as much -- or as little -- as you want. The fact of the matter is, if you want to earn more, you just have to work more and build up a reputation as a high-quality video game tester. If you can do that, you will not be limited to the amount of games you can test. In reality, you'll only be limited to the amount of jobs you can handle, as well as by the time you can devote to this.

Many people test video games in their spare time, as a way to earn some extra cash on the side. Those part-timers usually feel that it ruins the gaming experience if they test too many hours a week. Other people, however, are more motivated and work up to 60 to 80 hours a week doing this for money. For them, the paychecks will be significantly larger and much more pleasing to the eye.

In addition, your reputation matters as well. If you can provide high-quality feedback and become known as a game tester who works hard and always completes every assignment handed to him, then naturally you will qualify for more jobs and command a higher testing fee.

At the same time, your skill level will also help determine how much money you earn per hour. If you're able to go through a game very quickly and beat it without much effort, then you can devote drastically lower amounts of time to your game testing. In layman's terms: the better you are at playing video games, the more money you can make every hour as a paid game tester.

So even though most gamers will never make $300 an hour, it is very possible to make at least $40-$80 an hour testing games for companies. Anyway you slice it, that's not a bad fee for testing and playing video games all day long.

DVD-R Hard Drive Recorder Media Center

I have been putting up with prerecorded television on its traditional formats for years now.

I guess that it would have been around 3 or 4 years ago when I decided that I could do without the VHS, it was a sad day saying goodbye to some of the movies I owned on Video Cassette but it was a relief to not only lose the necessity to store these bible sized monsters in the house, but also to remove the triple wired dinosaur form the living room. Well this old relic of my youth had been replaced with a normal DVD player and soon my DVD collection started in earnest.

The trouble is that I don't really want to store large items of digital media anymore. My music has all been compressed down into 320kbps mp3, my photos are all now burned onto DVD's and stored in triplicate.

So I start converting my DVD's and ripping them onto my hard drive. trouble is that before long I have almost 60 Gig of movies and really I prefer to watch them on my TV than on the PC screen. Then a solution occurs to me, a complete home entertainment solution.

I needed mass storage and it was only going to be a matter of time before I found a solution.

There it was, a DVD hard disc recorder which could like do everything I wanted and here it is a:Philips Hard Disc DVD Recorder with 250gig hard drive.

First I networked it into my PC and dragged across 80 Gig of movies in DivX format ( that is about 100 films ). Next my photos for the past few years ( some 30 Gig ) were imported followed by 30 Gig of music in mp3 format to join the party.

Next I hooked up the DVDr recorder to my TV ( sadly I am not yet an owner of a flatscreen TV but that is surely only a matter of time ) and piped the excellent audio connection to my home hifi.

The results are superb, even though I have not even explored this unit's impressive recording capacity - and it is capable of that lovely Video Plus thing - I have now a complete home media centre at a very attractive price.

Hard drive DVDr machines are available at Telephones Online [http://www.telephonesonline.co.uk/_dvdr_recorders.asp] whilst the model I purchased was the DVDR3460H Philips Hard Disc DVD Recorder [http://www.telephonesonline.co.uk/details.asp?prodID=1659&title=Philips+Hard+Disc+DVD+Recorder]

Previously I had tried various abortive options. This now has restored my household to a complete full on media experience.

A Night to Remember: The Sinking of the Titanic [VHS] Overview

Two years after 20th Century Fox released its melodramatic disaster film Titanic in 1953, Walter Lord's meticulously researched book A Night to Remember surprised its publishers by becoming a phenomenal bestseller. Lord had an intuition that readers craved the reality of the Titanic disaster and not the romantically mythologized translations (like Fox's film, starring Barbara Stanwyck), which relied on fictional characters to "enhance" the world's worst maritime disaster. Lord's book proved that the truth was far more compelling than fiction, outlining the many "if onlys" (if only the iceberg had been spotted a few minutes earlier, etc.) that lent somber irony to the loss of 1,500 Titanic passengers. Three years after Lord's book appeared, it was brought to the screen with the kind of riveting authenticity that Lord had insisted upon in his own research. The 1958 British production of A Night to Remember remains a definitive dramatization of the disaster, adhering to the known facts of the time and achieving a documentary-like immediacy that matches (and in some ways surpasses) the James Cameron epic released 39 years later. The film erroneously perpetuates the once-common belief that the Titanic sunk in one piece (instead of breaking in half as its bow began to plunge), but many other misconceptions are accurately corrected, and the intelligent screenplay by thriller master Eric Ambler is a model of factual suspense. By making Titanic the star of the film, director Roy Baker emphasizes the excessive confidence of the booming industrial age and creates an intense you-are-there realism that pays tribute to Walter Lord's tenacious quest for truth. --Jeff Shannon

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum [VHS] Overview

"Something familiar, something peculiar, something for everyone: a comedy tonight!" Those words from the opening song pretty much describe the menu in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, a frantic adaptation of the stage musical by Larry Gelbart and Burt Shevelove. The wild story, set in ancient Rome, follows a slave named Pseudolus (Zero Mostel, snorting and gibbering) as he tries to extricate himself from an increasingly farcical situation; Mostel and a bevy of inspired clowns, including Phil Silvers, Jack Gilford, and Buster Keaton, keep the slapstick and the patter perking. The cast also includes the young Michael Crawford as a love-struck innocent. This project landed in the lap of Richard Lester, then one of the hottest directors in the world after his success with the Beatles' films. Lester telescoped the material through his own joke-a-second sensibility, and also ripped out some of the songs from Stephen Sondheim's Broadway score. The result is a pixilated romp and very close to the vaudeville spirit suggested by the title--though anyone with a low tolerance for Zero Mostel's overbearing buffoonery may be in trouble. Oddly enough, amidst all the frenzy, Lester creates a grungy, earthy Rome that seems closer to the real thing than countless respectable historical films on the subject. --Robert Horton

Big Deal on Madonna Street [VHS] Overview

In this classic Italian spoof, a gang of bungling burglars set their eyes on a local pawn shop, but the elaborate robbery never comes off. The would-be crooks--including a nearly senile safecracker--are too easily distracted by life's joys and passions. The silent-film intertitles and jazz score create a marvelous send-up of Hollywood caper films.

Review Odyssey [VHS]

Odyssey [VHS] Overview

Andrei Konchalovsky's expansive television mini-series production of Homer's epic poem gets off to clumsy start as he tries to squeeze the Trojan War into a mere half hour, but once the arrogant but honorable Odysseus (strikingly played by Armand Assante) and his loyal crew begin their doomed voyage home, this film turns into a fantastical adventure. Integrating often-stunning special effects with inventive art design, Konchalovsky achieves a beautiful look on a limited budget as he follows the 10-year ordeal of Odysseus from his battles with the Cyclops and the magical Circe (Bernadette Peters) to his secret homecoming and his confrontation with the treacherous Eurymachus (Eric Roberts). Isabella Rossellini appears as his spiritual guide, the goddess Athena, with Greta Scacchi as Odysseus's faithful wife and Vanessa Williams as the seductive Calypso. The rest of the cast includes Geraldine Chaplin, Jeroen Krabbé, Christopher Lee, and Irene Papas. The production was shot on location in and around the Mediterranean, making for a lush, lovely visual experience. --Sean Axmaker
