Pioneer Releases the First Ever 12x Blu-ray Drives - BDR-205

Blu-ray technology has, without doubt, revolutionized the way we experience movies and games. With its high-power definitions, storage, and quality of video, it has left viewers spellbound and dumbstruck. Although it was thought that this technology would never become affordable, with the advent of Blu-ray enabled PS3s all over the globe, and simultaneous innovations in the field, Blu-ray is now within reach for most tech-loving people.

Where there is a new disc type, there has to be a new disc writer. Pioneer has now come out with the BDR-205. This Blu-ray Disc Computer Writer is supposed to be the fastest around - with its 12x speed capacities leaving the older 8x versions far behind.

With this new release, Pioneer has leaped forward in the market of computer hardware, and has also made a landmark contribution to computer technology in general. Steve Cohn at the Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. (he is the director of the Optical Sales Dept.) has this to say:

"The BDR-205 drive represents our ongoing efforts to combine Pioneer's engineering expertise with advanced technologies, and our next generation Blu-ray Disc writer is a great example of our no-compromise approach to optical disc product development. We are bringing to market the fastest Blu-ray Disc writer to date, and it is just one of the many 'firsts' that have come to define Pioneer's 30-year heritage in optical disc innovation and leadership."

Technical specifications for the BDR-205 12x Blu-ray Burner include:

  • Up to 12x writing speed on BD-R & BD-R DL media

  • Write up to 50Gbytes on one BD-R DL disc (equal to 10 single layer DVDs)

  • Serial ATA (SATA) Interface

Short, sweet and packs a power punch with the "50GB write limit" criteria! In fact, with the BDR-205, Pioneer has unleashed a new high in terms of our limits of storing and writing on portable discs. Considering that HD movies and games need a huge amount of information to look and sound good, this piece of engineering will make HD-movies more common than ever before. Moreover, the BDR-205 is equipped with a low vibration mechanism (LVM) - a design that is primed to maintain a high write accuracy so that people who need to write huge amounts of sensitive and critical data on Blu-ray discs can rely on the BDR-205 not to let them down.

And it's not just the movies, the BDR-205 will be useful to anyone who needs a heavy-duty portable disc, and needs to write data on it - fast. This writer drive will be soon be the norm on all desktops in institutions and corporates first, and will then slowly work its way to home PCs within a few years.

HD movies consist of a lot of data; with any new feature film, there are going to be tens of gigabytes of video, sound, and system information. If you're a computer builder, or if you are planning on purchasing the drive yourself, keep in mind that you could really use a spacious hard drive to compliment the BDR-205 burner. Although 12x is an amazing speed for reading and writing Blu-ray disks, the drive is also able to process DVD's at a speed of 16x and a solid 40x when processing media CDs.

Pioneer stayed true to its name with the new BDR-205 model; it's the first and the fastest Blu-ray drive of its kind. The future is here - right now - with the BDR-205. It is the most silent of all drives around - something that is surprising, as you would wonder if it's really writing 50GB worth of data so fast and so quietly. Moreover, note that this drive not only has the fastest write speeds, it also reads just as fast - ranging from a 40x reading speed for a CD to a 8x read speed for a Blu-ray disc. Overall, this drive is a must have for those who want to be at the cutting edge of technology, as well as those who need to work with obscene data sizes.

Pioneer is sure to bring on other new innovations similar to this new unit. The BDR-205 will lead the way for other new "super" drives like it, that will revolutionize technology right before our eyes.

Le Mans [VHS] Overview

A classic auto-racing movie starring Steve McQueen, Le Mans puts the audience in the driver's seat for what is often called the most grueling race in the world. The French auto race Le Mans is a 24-hour affair through the French countryside, a demanding ordeal for any driver. McQueen (Bullitt, The Great Escape) plays the American driver, locked in an intense grudge match with his German counterpart even as he wrestles with the guilt over causing an accident that cost the life of a close friend. McQueen is his usual stoic magnetic self, and the racing sequences are among the best ever committed to film. A solid character-driven story combines with raw visceral power to make Le Mans a rich tapestry of action and thrills. --Robert Lane

Odessa File [VHS] Best Review

Odessa File [VHS] Overview

An overeager German journalist (Jon Voight) discovers a long-buried secret plot beginning to resurface in this moderately compelling, surprisingly straightforward adaptation of a novel by conspiracy whiz Fredrick (Day of the Jackal) Forsythe. Although this somewhat pokey suspenser never quite flows the way a classic espionage thriller should, it does offer a number of compelling diversions along the way, including a blessedly nonhammy (and impressively accented) performance by Voight, Derek Jacobi's amusingly Freudian supporting turn, and a tremendously physical hand-to-hand confrontation in a print shop that leaves no pane of glass intact. Maximillian Schell's scenery-chewing, deliciously evil cameo almost makes this worth the watch by itself. Andrew Lloyd Webber composed the garishly florid (yet somehow effective) score. --Andrew Wright

Nascar 2011: The Game

The release of Nascar 2011: The Game is going to be one of the hottest Nascar racing games of all time. I am personally very excited about this racing game coming out because I own a Wii gaming system and the only Nascar game for Wii so far is Nascar Kart Racing which I have not had the opportunity to play yet. This game is not only being released for the Wii but it will also be available for Playstation and Xbox systems as well. That means everyone will be able to join in on the fun that this game provides. Here are some things that I think are going to be a lot of fun about this game.

One thing that I really like about Nascar 2011 is the option to play as yourself or to play as one of your favorite race car drivers. This puts you in the driver's seat beating and banging into the other drivers on the track. It also allows you to be one of the real-world drivers that you like to cheer for on Sundays which means that you can get a little bit of payback against a driver that you do not like.

Another feature that I like about this Nascar game is how detailed the graphics are. When I went over and watched the game trailer I noticed that the damages that were done to the cars while racing were very realistic looking, and the wrecks that occur are some of the most extreme that have ever been experienced in a racing video game on any system.

Something else that I think is really cool is the multi-player mode that allows you to compete against other players online. This is something that I like to have with any game that I play, but I especially love it with racing games. I will be able to take my player, put him on the track with all of the other online players and battle it out to see who has the best driving skills.

There are a lot of other features of Nascar 2011: The Game that I could go on and on talking about, but you get the idea that this is going to be the best Nascar racing game of all time. If you have a Wii system I am sure to see you on the track if you are playing in online mode.

Are you ready to play the Nascar 2011 Game? Head over to this site and preorder it today so that you can make sure that you are one of the first ones to get to play Nascar The Game

The Palace Builder Game Review

The Palace Builder is a building simulation game set in the romantic upper class world of French aristocracy. You will design and manage the construction of the most beautiful structures in the kingdom. Will your work attract the attention of the Queen, or will a secret destroy your chances for fame and fortune?

Young Gabrielle has always been fascinated by architecture and the construction of beautiful buildings and landscapes. Unfortunately, when her father tried to apprentice her to a master architect, the master refused because she was a girl. Not one to give up, Gabrielle's father devised a plan to dress her up as a boy and managed to get the master architect to accept "Gabriel" as his new apprentice.

Now that Gabrielle is able to learn from a master, she has to quickly learn everything she can, and show just how good an architect she can be. And that's where you come in; your task is to help her design and build the best palaces as she slowly works her way towards more complicated designs and bigger commissions from the cream of the French aristocracy. And who knows... maybe she will get to design and build a palace for the Queen some day. That is if her cover doesn't get blown and her deception gets revealed first!

The Palace Builder is a "town" builder similar to the Build-A-Lot series, but with many unique things going for it. In normal town-building games, each map has a grid that you need to build houses on. In The Palace Builder, each plot of land you get is an open area where you can design and build your dream palace any which way you want.

The worker and resource management for The Palace Builder is slightly more complicated as well. There are gardeners who are used to build and maintain gardens, drafters to draw up plans for buildings, builders to construct the buildings, and sculptors to create appealing decorations and ornaments. There are also 4 different types of resources that you need to keep an eye on.

At each level, you have a plot of land to build on, and a set of objectives you need to complete. These objectives include building a set number of certain buildings, and also how much appeal your entire palace plot generates. Appeal is how beautiful the place is and how much the neighbors like it, and is earned when you complete buildings and decorations. Generally the more expensive and long the construction is, the more appeal the structure generates. Achieving enough appeal each level allows Gabrielle to complete a section of her own palace as well.

When you start the game, you only have access to the most basic of structures including a chateau, stables, gardens and fountains. As you progress, you will gain access to a whole variety of structures with which to decorate your plot and increase its appeal. You have to be careful though; many of the structures have multiple stages of construction, each with different resource and worker requirements.

The graphics in The Palace Builder are not fantastic; it feels slightly dated with its 2 dimensional art compared to other contemporary games which boast stunning 3D visuals. However, it does add a few touches that make it enjoyable. While you are planning and constructing your palaces, you will get animations of the French aristocracy enjoying the results of your work. The ladies will be quietly strolling around or having a picnic, while the men will be dueling each other with their swords all around your gardens and statues.

Overall, this game is a step in the right direction for town-building simulation games. In other town-building games, you are either allowed to construct buildings only in specific plots, or need to demolish roads to change the landscape, or are restricted in building placement due to efficiency issues. The freeform design and construction in The Palace Builder is a nice change that will appeal to gamers who like to create aesthetically pleasing works of art!

Rating: 4.0/5.0
